6 Things Every Mom Can Be Thankful for This Thanksgiving

Mom Moment 7

fortune cookie fortuneIt’s almost the most wonderful time of the year. It is that time that we give thanks, and really, maybe that is what makes it wonderful at all. It forces us to assess our lives and be grateful for all the little things in the world that we take for granted.

As moms, it's the little things that can sometimes make us the most thankful. Here's a list of little things that help us get through the day:

Calliou, the Wiggles & Dora: Yep. I said it. I know Calliou whines incessantly and Dora’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard and those Wiggles are so freaking upbeat so early in the morning. They all just annoy the piss out of us. But all three are innocuous, safe, educational, and make one hell of a mommy’s little helper if mommy needs to change a tampon in private, grab a sip of Chardonnay, or just brush her teeth.

Benadryl: Oh, you know where I am going with this. I’ve never done it, but I know many women who have. Benadryl is apparently liquid sleep for overtired children. I usually let them throw their tantrums and work it out, but I must admit, I’ve had my nights where it’s crossed my mind.

Binkies: Keeping kids quiet since 1935. Well, pacifiers have been around for as long as children have been being born, in one form or another, but isn’t it brilliant to be able to hand your crying child a binky and have it soothe him/her enough to go to sleep? We never used them because, obviously, I like to do things the hard way.

White Noise: My youngest had colic and I would have lost my mind had it not been for white noise; the fan on high, my Dyson and the soothing sounds of a white noise machine. Go ahead, believe Joe Schmoe that you don’t need it; see if you agree after five hours of redirecting your preschooler to bed.

Wipe Warmers: Who knew I’d be grateful for something seemingly so freaking unneeded. Well, just try wiping a half-asleep newborn’s butt with cold wipes. That baby will lose his ever-loving mind and who could blame them? I don’t want any surprise freezing wipe attacking my derriere in the middle of the night either. Surprise! Are you awake?

Grandparents: They are awesome, and for all the times they’ve stuck their nose in your business unprovoked, it is all worth it when you can drop your kids off overnight and have the peace of mind that someone who loves them almost as much as you do will take care of them.

There is a lot more to be grateful this Thanksgiving week; my list is endless. If we choose to focus on the blessings in our lives instead of the worries, our lives would be a lot less stressful. Let’s try it for just one day.

What are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving?

I'm thankful for never having to feel like drugging my child so she would sleep...sorry, but that's terrible.

Never use wipe warmers on girls!! They hold warm bacteria and cause UTI's... Sorry to put a dent in your thankful bubble :/

Shelly, the ~20 degree difference in temperature would not result in a significant difference in bacterial growth. The bacteria we commonly encounter grow between 40-140 degrees Fahrenheit.

I have had to drug my son once, because he could not sleep and he so needed to.  a little chamomile a 1/4 dose of allergy meds and off to sleep he went. He was so tired but he could not fall asleep and we tired everything we could think of so I call his doctor and that is what she told me to do.
