The older my kid gets, the more time I find myself spending trying to convince her things from my childhood were so much cooler than anything she has on her list for Santa. Now before you roll your eyes at the desperate old lady, let me tell you, it's been working! I pull out something I loved as a kid, and what do ya know, she tends to fall in love too.
It's got me thinking. What if this Christmas we all mixed it up a little? Sure, get them some things from the hot holiday toy list. But what if we all went back to the basics and purchased some of the old standbys as holiday gifts? We loved them so much, why wouldn't our kids love them too?
Bonus here is a lot of these old favorites are pretty easy on the wallet! Need some ideas? Here's a whole list that is guaranteed to work:

I liked a lot of board games. My dd is just getting old enough to play them
I agree! My toy list was way cooler than my kids. I acutally wanted stuff I could use with others, and go outside and play with
My 6 y/o loves slinky! But the paddle and balls I find are cheap imitations of the ones we had, and fall apart immediately. Where do you find sturdy ones???
We have some of those toys (hello, I have 2 boys, of course we have toy cars! Are those really old toys?) & some of the others would be good gifts. A checker game would be fun!
I would like to find more Tinker Toys. We have some that I got at a garage sale, but they do seem hard to find.
I am still obsessed with the bouncy balls like the ones in the photo!
I loved jacks
We have a lot of these. i don't think I really had a favorite, as a kid.
These are all fun ideas. I remember many of them
