Daylight Savings Time Does Not HAVE to be a Bummer for Moms & Dads

daylight savingsFor some parents, daylight savings timeis awful. There is no doubt that the extra hour wreaks havoc on sleep schedules and body clocks and most kids do have trouble adjusting. But are we really so cynical that we don’t recognize the utter and complete joy that comes from having an extra hour on the weekend? Seriously, people. Priorities!

In case you are one of the complainers (and if you are, shut up already!) let’s consider all this extra hour means: More sleep, more weekend, more time! Personally, I always see the fall back as a bonus. The spring forward comes with the daylight bonus, though. And yes, we will now be plunged into darkness for a few months (ugh). But the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.  Yes, even for parents.


Oh I see all the complaints on my Facebook page — “the person who invented Daylight Savings CLEARLY did not have kids.” — and I get it. I do. But we have no choice, so let’s make the most of it and soak up this extra hour as a bonus rather than a punishment. Sound like a plan?

With that in mind, here are some ideas for your extra hour this weekend:

  • Surprise yourself: One of my favorite parts of Daylight Savings is waking up “on time” and THEN setting my clock back. It is so much fun to have that extra hour.
  • Do early brunch: I love beating the lines at our local brunch spot by showing up right around opening rather than the usual couple hours after when everyone is starving and grumpy.
  • Watch a movie: The extra hour is a great time to crawl onto the couch with the kids and watch a movie sans guilt about the kids watching TV when they could be outside. It’s bonus time, after all!
  • Run: I feel like Daylight Savings is the day where my run is free. Usually my husband and I fight about my daily run because it takes an hour out of our family time. But not tomorrow! I am using my bonus hour to run, run, run.
  • Go outside: Soak up that sunlight and let it warm your bones. It will be nighttime sooner now.
  • Do a playdate: Invite some other parent friends over for an early breakfast so you are not the only ones being awakened by monkeys at 5 a.m. instead of the usual 6 a.m.
  • Lock your door: Depending on the age of your kids, you can get away with a little tip from my friend: leave something simple (like yogurt) in the fridge, a leftover piece of Halloween candy and a movie on pause in the living room. Instruct the kiddos not to wake you. lock your bedroom door and SLEEP away that extra hour. It can work if your kids are 5+. Honestly!
