Mom Confession: I Pass Off Store-Bought Muffins as Homemade for the PTA Bake Sale

Say What!? 9

cupcakeThe PTA Bake Sale gives some moms a whole lotta angst. They feel pressure to participate, but they don't have the time and ... they don't like to (or can't) bake. So rather than not particpate at all, one mom admits she does the unthinkable:

She buys store-bought muffins (which she describes as yummy) and passes them off as her own -- even going so far as to take them out of the packaging and re-wrap them to make them look "cute."

See what she has to say:

It seems like her lie is actually pretty time-consuming. It would actually take less time to either bake herself or just buy the store-bought muffins and tell the truth about them. Even quicker, she could write a check to the PTA or simply make a purchase at the bake sale (since she obviously can't cook herself).

Clearly this isn't about a bake sale, but about a mom trying to look good, a Type A Mom who can't bake but has to be "perfect." Chill out mom! We can't do it all! And if anyone on the PTA or at the school judges you, they're not worth trying to impress.

Have you ever passed store-bought treats off as homemade for a bake sale? Can you understand where this mom is coming from?

Whatever gets you through the night...I wouldn't pay $2 for a store bought muffin, though. ;)

I've not done that.

It reminds of the beginning of the movie "Calendar Girls" when one of the ladies wins a baking contest with a bought cake, and sort of admits it.  "If it has to be really special, get it a Marks and Spencers."

I can always tell which ones are purchased - dont' lie - just write a check or bring it in original packaging.

Think about the ethics lesson she's teaching her kids... sad.

Why?  If you are sending store-bought cakes into a bake sale, I am sure no one cares.  Don't bother lying.

Why does anyone care and furthermore you made the comment several times, "she obviously can't cook herself", what makes you say that? Have you personally tasted any of her cooking? Maybe she has a really busy life and she feels pressure from other mothers to bake homemade goods (dont act like this doesn't happen). As far as ethics, really? We tell our children about Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, ect and you want to shame her for this. A little silly if you ask me. I bet alot of moms do this but never say a word, she just had the nerve to finally say it. Get off her back!!! As parents we all do the best we can, its a shame how mean people can be.
