The Here Comes Honey Boo Boo clan has a hit TV show on their hands and a big raise from TLC to come. So what is Mama June Shannon going to do with all that money? Improve her kids' lives? Nah, she's putting the cash away ... for the future.
Wait, what?
June and Honey Boo Boo herself, little Alana Thompson, showed up on Jimmy Kimmel this week where the 7-year-old made her now viral announcement that she wants to see President Obama re-elected. But while everyone's talking about whether kids should get involved in politics, June's big announcement has been seriously ignored.
According to her, the majority of the cash that's coming in from TLC isn't going to be spent any time soon:
I know what's best for my kids. That's why I chose to put money in the trust funds, because this journey may last six months or it might last a year, but I don't want 10 years down the road Alana or any of the kids to be thinking, 'Oh my God, I have nothing to show for it.' So I wanted to put it in trust funds very equally for all the kids. So most of the money is there, and the other money goes to our community outreach program ... that we raise for the anti-bullying.
On the one hand, I want to commend her. We need more savers in this country. We need more parents TEACHING their kids to save in this country.
I was raised by savers, and I know I struggle with my own 7-year-old when she gets some tooth fairy or birthday money. I'm trying to teach her that some things aren't worth blowing your money on. I'm trying to encourage her to put money in her piggybank for a rainy day, or at least that Xbox game she really wants.
On the other hand, I can't help looking at how Alana and her sisters live. They go to the auctions to buy recently expired food. They eat roadkill for crying out loud!! Wouldn't it be prudent for June to take a portion of the Honey Boo Boo salary she's setting aside and use them now? At least give her kids some decent -- aka healthy -- meals?
It's nice to save for a rainy day or you know, college, but kids only get one start in life. You have just once chance to get it right. If you have to skimp on the important things like fresh vegetables because they're expensive, you have no business squirreling money away for your kids' future.
Do you think it's OK for June to save all the Here Comes Honey Boo Boo money instead of using it on her kids now? What would you do if you were her?

nothing she did was going to make you happy, was it?
Usually I am in agreement with you on just about everything you write but this left me asking if you believe EVERYTHING you see on reality TV?? Her kids are always clean, dressed decently, well fed-although what they are fed leaves a lot to be desired nutrtionally, and her house never seems to be trashed.I know so many people in my town that don't have the label " trash" like they do and have money but live in dirty filthy houses, their kids are little jerks and most of the time are allowed to look like they just got out of bed!
I like June. I think she should do some things differently, but who doesn't disagree with the parenting style of other parents sometimes? I think her decision to save the money in trusts for her kids is incredibly smart and I commend her for living within her means in a time when EVERYONE is bitching about how people DON'T DO THAT! Leave June alone and go question the parenting of someone else who deserves it.
I think she's doing really good. Those kids don't appear to be doing without anything important because of the savings and some day it will likely help them out a lot.
Wow......I commend the mother. Nothing she does is going to make you happy. Oh and I think a deer that was hit is a lot different than a possum....Geez....I know lots of people that will clean a eat a deer that was just hit and killed, it is not uncommon in the south.
I think she is doing an EXCELLENT job in investing the money. My husband hunts and we eat deer all winter and spring long. Granted it is not road kill BUT....I wont lie there was one time I saw a deer hit and killed in front of my and thought ugh what a waste of good meat. LOL. Like others have said they are always semi well groomed and the house always seems to be well kept. Their manners and whatnot aside they really seem to be a well rounded happy and full of love family. Who are we to say she is doing anything wrong.
Anyway, hubby and some others butchered it and cooked it up in a stew. I don't normally like red meat; but it was totally delicious! It's better than letting it go to waste.
