Mom Goes to Pick Up 6-Year-Old From School & No One Knows Where She Is

girl with backpackThis is one of those stories that turns otherwise sane people into helicopter moms and dad. When Tiffany Roberts of Winter Springs, Florida, went to pick up her 6-year-old daughter from school recently, she learned she wasn't there nor had she been for three hours.

She was supposed to have gone straight to the school's after-care program, but never made it. No one had any clue why or where Haleigh was. Again, she's 6!

Tiffany told WKMG, "I thought she was kidnapped. I was in tears. I was panicking. That's a mother's worst nightmare."

Fortunately, Haleigh is fine. It turns out that she'd gotten into the line of children who walk home and had mistakenly taken off with them. She somehow navigated an extremely busy road and eventually met up with a friend's teenage sister who must have taken her back to the school (the details on how she made it back are a little sparse). But it's painful to even imagine how many other terrifying endings this story could have had. A 6-year-old on her own for THREE Hours! Wandering along a majorly busy street!

More from The Stir: Missing 4-Year-Old Found Under His Own Porch After a Week of Searching

And perhaps most shocking of all has been the school's response to the incident. Tiffany says that when she confronted the school's principal about what happened, he blamed Haleigh!

When I spoke with the principal, she told me that it was not their responsibility, that my daughter should have known where to go. Elementary schoolers period should not be going off on their own alone.

Even children who supposedly know where they're supposed to go don't always go there. You simply can't leave that much responsibility to children that young. It's beyond outrageous that this happened, and for the school to respond with anything but heartfelt apologies and actions to make sure it doesn't happen again is outrageous.

Do you think the school is to blame here?

Thank God that most teachers are very careful of their kindergartners and will walk each group to where they need to go. My sons kinder teacher did that for all 30 kids in her class. She was awesome.

The school does have some sort of accountability. However, if the girl got in the line of kids that walk home and she knows that she doesn't walk why, I wonder why she didn't say someting.

Ridiculous. If I drop my child at school into the care of the staff, it is that staff's responsibility to know where my child is every moment of the day until I come pick him up! Or there will be a "come to Jesus meeting"!!!!

Wow! Id be super pissed. Our teachers towards for the younger grades do not release them till they make eye contact with a parent unless they know that child walks home. (Most in first and kindergarten do not). Poor thing. Sooooo glad someone she knew found her.

She's 6! Poor baby didn't know and yes it is fully the schools responsibility! I would raise hell if this was my child!

Hell yes the school is totally to blame. There should be tight protocol in place to ensure this exact thing does not happen... such as sign in at the after school program and the after school staff should have been alarmed immediately that she was a no show.

And of ALL places to have this happen... Pedophiles Paradise Florida!

Id have been shitting my pants if I were that mom and I would have feared the worst instantly. The school fucked up BIG TIME.

Wow, at our elementary the kids aren't allowed to "walk" home on their own until 4th grade. Until then they have to wait with the parent pick up kids for their parents to come get them to walk. The kindergarten kids are not even allowed to walk unsupervised to the buslane, parent pickup area, etc. They have a group of 5th graders who have volunteered to help the teacher one for each bus and they follow the teacher for each little subgroup. She drops off the group for parent pickup which is supervised by a staff member and then everyone heads off to the bus lanes where she checks them off against a list, every day!

In kindergarten my son is not allowed to walk home alone per school rules. He is not even allowed out the door until his teacher see's me. After the fear and anxieties I am feeling over Jessica Ridgeways dissapearance I certainly will not be letting him walk to or from school alone til he is much older.
