Mom of 6 Trades SUV For Bizarre, Super-Sized Bike

The most bizarre mom moment of the week? Seeing a Portland, Seattle woman drive her six kids around town on a super-sized bicycle.

That's right. A bicycle built for seven. She traded in her gas guzzling Suburban for this unusual mode of transportation. While I admire this mom's stamina -- and God knows she's doing more for the environment than I am -- there is one huge, huge problem with her pedal, powered contraption.

I have wonder, is this really safe on the open road? What if it turned over or, God forbid, they were hit by a car? Emily Finch Wheels her children (2 to 9) around town in this bike outfitted with a wheelbarrow and various other types of seats. It's quite impressive the way she zips down the city streets fully loaded (kids, backpacks, groceries, etc). It just seems dangerous.

Though, that doesn't seem like a worry to Finch, who sold her vehicle when the family moved to Portland. "I started looking at my life... I was living in a giant house and had a nine-person Suburban. I remember thinking, there's no reason I can't walk or bike around town," Emily told BikePortland.org. "I was at a time in my life when something had to change. When I saw that bike, I knew it. I said, 'This is it. This is going to change my life.'"

A noble decision, to be sure. But still a crazy one. I can't imagine what a pain that thing is in the rain. I would take that monstrous Suburban in a heartbeat. To each her own, I suppose.

Would you ride your kids around on a super-sized bike like this?

This woman deserves a huge round of applause! Not only is she refusing to accept the notion that she "deserves" a big car and a big house and all the other trappings of a "proper" North American life, but she is setting a wonderful example for her kids. She is being frugal with her money, active with her body and engaging her mind. The only way that this new bicycle would be unsafe is if she drove it in an unsafe manner, or people drove their gass guzzlers in an unsafe manner around her. Obviously, you can't control those things, but driving a car is dangerous too, so why not save a ton of money getting around?

There are lots of very bike friendly cities around with bike lanes and laws and what not to protect them, Portland is one of those cities! So is Seattle.

Good job lady! Except she probably won't be so positive when it starts to rain and snow:(

This might be unsafe in some towns, but Portland, OR is a *very* bike friendly city. There are dedicated bike lanes everywhere and drivers generally watch out for cyclist. This looks very good. Portland is laid out in such a way that it's probably very practical too. Although I hope she kept the car for some trips to the beach!

When our car broke down for good, my husband was recently laid off. Our daughter was about to start kindergarten and the Houston schools didn't offer busing but we lived 3 miles from school. I drove our good cargo work earl in the morning so husband needed a way to get the girl to school. He picked up a tandem bike attachment for $50 and the two of them rode to and from school. Houston was not nearly as bike friendly as Portland but they made it work. My daughter was the envy of the kindergarten!

I would love to see this 'enlightened soul' come January when there is 3 feet of snow and she goes on Craig's list looking for a cheap 4x4 that she can drive to the store in. Oh those soft headed liberals.

    Where does her husband sit?

Why does the 9 year old have to be attached to the back?  She's certainly old enough to ride alone.

Where does she put the groceries?

I totally think that rocks, I would love to just ride around with the little ones, I used to wagon my grocies back home when I lived downtown with my boys and they would walk our ride their bikes along side of me.  They loved it and I enjoyed the exercise

This is awesome! I would totally do this with my kids but in Los Angeles, where we currently live, it would be way too dangerous. I cant wait til I can get the heck out of this crazy city!
