The most bizarre mom moment of the week? Seeing a Portland, Seattle woman drive her six kids around town on a super-sized bicycle.
That's right. A bicycle built for seven. She traded in her gas guzzling Suburban for this unusual mode of transportation. While I admire this mom's stamina -- and God knows she's doing more for the environment than I am -- there is one huge, huge problem with her pedal, powered contraption.
I have wonder, is this really safe on the open road? What if it turned over or, God forbid, they were hit by a car? Emily Finch Wheels her children (2 to 9) around town in this bike outfitted with a wheelbarrow and various other types of seats. It's quite impressive the way she zips down the city streets fully loaded (kids, backpacks, groceries, etc). It just seems dangerous.

Though, that doesn't seem like a worry to Finch, who sold her vehicle when the family moved to Portland. "I started looking at my life... I was living in a giant house and had a nine-person Suburban. I remember thinking, there's no reason I can't walk or bike around town," Emily told BikePortland.org. "I was at a time in my life when something had to change. When I saw that bike, I knew it. I said, 'This is it. This is going to change my life.'"
A noble decision, to be sure. But still a crazy one. I can't imagine what a pain that thing is in the rain. I would take that monstrous Suburban in a heartbeat. To each her own, I suppose.
Would you ride your kids around on a super-sized bike like this?

dude, really? someone comes up with an ingenious solution to something that most of us feel uncomfortable about, using fuel that is actively devastating the planet our kids will inherit, and rather than unabashed applause, we're hearing....dangerous? Dangerous is the SUV-driving, texting-while-merging soccer moms where I live, not this brilliant and hopefully soon-to-be-emulated mama!!
p.s. the pic is a bit small, but I'm pretty sure I see helmets on everyone! I'm missing the "dangerous" as well as the "crazy" here. kids ride bikes every day, some without even wearing a helmet (not ok), and I'm sure they present a much bigger danger (more likely to dart suddenly, much much less visible to drivers) than this brilliant mama's solution. let's not have sour grapes, just because we may not have come up with as ingenious solution.....yet!
I ride my two kids to school and back every day on a cargo bike. I even go grocery shopping with it, I can hold two kids plus several bags of groceries. Yes, I could take my car, but it's good exercise, the kids enjoy it, it saves gas and expensive wear and tear on my car, and it's fun! I get stressed by commuting in my car back and forth, whereas biking calms me down and reduces my stress. With all the problems of pollution, global warming and obesity, you'd think that people like the author would be applauding people clever enough to make changes in their daily life that solve several problems at once, instea dof tearing them down and calling them crazy. Stay in your Suburban, lady, but I won't be cheering for you.
What I find said is her kids will never see all the wonderful things this country has to offer outside a 10 mile radius of their house. I read another article where she said 20 miles a day is all she and the kids can handle (bickering and kids getting tired). Her husband has a sedan for driving back and forth to his job at the hospital. I'm sure Portland is a wondeful city, but I can't imagine not piling in the car some weekends in fall for a color drive or a trip up north.
Me too, SK Smom24....WAY in the boondocks is where we live, as well.
