Pop quiz. Who was Robert Smalls? Joshua Chamberlain? Don't know? Well, brush up on your Civil War history right along with your kids while flipping through Robert Kennedy, Jr.'s new American Heroes children's books (aimed at 8-12 year-olds). The only two books in the series (so far) feature long-forgotten but important Civil War heroes, Smalls and Chamberlain--actually very cool guys.
The great thing is that Kennedy hand-picked historical accounts that are so juicy and suspenseful (in the thick of the night Smalls stole a fully loaded ship chock with guns and canons from the Confederate Army and delivered it to the Union!), that if they'd happened today, there'd surely be some kind of gritty reality show based on them. Your kids will love these, but the bonus is if you read them too, you' might actually feel smarter than a 5th grader. As if! Do you find that you learn a lot from your kid's books?
