Katie Holmes Makes Suri Start Dressing Like 'Poor' Kids

by Jeanne Sager on July 21, 2012 at 9:15 AM

Katie Holmes Suri CruiseOh thank goodness! Poor Suri Cruise has been through the wringer over the past few weeks, but we finally have some good news. Mom Katie Holmes has reportedly put the kibosh on all those designer clothes.

According to a "source," we won't be seeing Katie in high heels or lipstick any time soon. Along with her new Catholic school, the 6-year-old daughter of Katie and ex-husband Tom Cruise will have a uniform when she's in school, and "normal kid" clothes when she's out and about.

Let me just say it: it's about time!

My daughter is a year older than Suri, and if given the chance, would probably be dressed to the nines too. She is a budding fashionista who has decided she wants to be a model when she grows up (a decision we are hoping is just the passing whim of a 7-year-old ... pretty please). But she's just a kid, and I want her to feel like one. I want her to play hard!

There are all sorts of problems that come with dressing your kids in fancy clothes that most of us poor folks have to deal with -- the strain on the wallet, the way they separate a kid from friends who still wear Old Navy and Target (oh, excuse me, it's Tar-jay when you clothes shop). Tom and Katie are luckier than the rest of us in the sense that they don't have to worry about money.

But even rich celebrity parents can't escape the biggest issue with putting Suri in designer duds. It's the way they make kids feel. They feel like they have to take care of those clothes, they get nervous about going out and getting dirty.

But getting dirty is what being a kid is all about. Kids are supposed to jump in puddles, just for the sake of splashing water about. They're supposed to take off their shoes and stick their toes in mud, just to feel it squish. They're supposed to roll down grassy hills, and climb trees.

Nice clothes for school or special occasions are one thing. But kids need time to just be kids too, and not care about ruining a nice dress.

If Katie really wants Suri to enjoy a "normal" childhood, taking away her high heels and the lavish gifts from couture houses could be the best way to get started. Here's hoping the rumors that she's been returning all the clothes sent for Suri since they moved to New York are for real.

How much will you spend on clothes for your kids? What's your "nice" clothes policy?

Psh! I'm the Goodwill/Thirft store/Yard Sale QUEEN. My daughter is messy and plays hard so I dont see having to pay $20 for a teeshirt anywhere, anytime. And its not like she's dressed like some vagabond. She's usually well kept and coordinated anyway. And I'm lucky in the fact that she really doesnt care what she's dressed in as long as its comfortable :-p

The joke in our house is that if it weren't for hand-me-downs and thrift/consignment stores, our kids would be naked!  It isn't really far from the truth, though! LOL

I agree with you....my daughter is only 2 so she doesn't really care if she ruins a nice dress yet, but I never want her to worry about it. The first time she came home from her babysitter's with her clothes stained her babysitter apologized! I told her I couldn't care less- dirty kids are happy kids. And if it doesn't come out in the wash, it's not the end of the world when she's wearing a $4 shirt from WalMart. I am not going to send her there in her best dress (we save those for church!).

Also- so agree on hand me downs. My sister had two girls before I had two girls. She's done having kids so I have bins of clothes from her. I will pass on what has survived my children too. Nothing wrong with hand me downs :)

My niece is 6 years old and refuses to wear anything but dresses. She flounces around in little slippers with a small heal. She went to day camp last week. She came down the stairs dressed in a mismatched Hello Kitty shirt and a fu-fu, sparkely, tulle skirt and spun around to show her mother. Her mother sent her back up the stairs to change into more camp appropriate clothing. She ended up wearing a skort with a (matching)t-shirt.

Some little girls seem to have been born to be ultra feminen, nothing odd about that. My kids were pretty much the opposite, but so what?

i am allll for kids getting in there and gettin dirty :)

i grew up with "sunday clothes" and i remember how uncomfortable it was with my mom hovering and wiping all the time, and the dam shoes!!  tight, couldnt run in them and i got a swat if they got scuffed- not by mom but by my grandmother.   it  is NOT a way a child should remember CHILDHOOD.   i rarely buy "sunday clothes" for my kids, and it drives my mom insane.. hell, i have one kid who rarely wears his shoes!! :)  and if they are forced to wear "sunday clothes" i always bring tee shirts nd shorts to change into after the appropriate family pics have been snapped. :)

    kids should be kids...

You people have way to much time on your hands. Who cares what another mother is choosing to dress her children in? I don't dress my kids in designer clothes either but who are we to judge what Katie Holmes is doing? Just because The National Inquirer snaps pictures of her doesn't mean you know her.

I'm sorry. Why do sooo many people believe these stories when the source is "a source." that's pretty much code for someone is making crap up.

If I love love something, I'll pay a little more, but I generally shop consignment, thrifts and eBay. With that said, I am a damn good spot remover w my laundry prowess so if it gets something on it, I don't sweat it. It's not worth the fretting!
