Would you allow your tween daughter to get a bikini wax or a waxing in general? One waxing franchise is holding a promotion during the month of July -- 50% off of all waxing services for all girls 15 and younger.
The ad has many moms up in arms since it appears to be for a bikini wax (though it specifically says all waxing services), and they think it sexualizes young girls who aren't yet old enough for such a service.
I call bullshit.
As a woman who was a hairy teen, thanks to my Latina genes and hitting puberty, I wish waxing had been more mainstream when I was 12. I may not have had my boobs but I definitely had hair everywhere and it was a real pain trying to hide it. Tube socks and T-shirts over bathing suits only can do so much.

In middle school, swimming was mandatory and my life would have been loads more pleasant if I could have gotten a bikini wax rather than trying to not look like I had a chia pet in a headlock when I wore my bathing suit. It was embarrassing and humiliating to a young teenager.
I don’t think waxing sexualizes girls; it simply gives them a safer alternative to shaving. You don't want to know how many chunks I took out of my ankle when I first started shaving my legs. I'd hate to imagine what damage I could have done with a razor in my pubic area at the tender age of 12 or 13.
The one issue I have with the ad is with this language:
During the month of July, girls 15 and undercan enjoy their FIRST waxing experience and find it NATURAL, SAFE and PLEASANT. [emphasis added]
Let’s be honest, waxing is never "pleasant." Natural and safe, yes, but there is no such thing as pleasurable waxing -- only degrees of pain tolerance. You might want to warn your daughters before they take the plunge.
Do you think it's okay for teen girls to wax?

They can wear swim shorts, no one is saying they can't. But this article isn't saying girls should only wear regular swimsuits, if girls want to instead of removing hair, they can. In situations like aquatic sports though, removing hair is practically neccessary.
But in your point of view Claudia, if women shouldn't remove pubic hair, why should they remove any hair at all? If you say the culture is obsessed with the female crotch, wouldn't you say the same culture is obsessed with the female leg as well? So why stop at the crotch?
To the other "feminists": What exactly does realizing you're hairy have to do with being sexualized? Two sexes exist in humans, the male sex is hairy and the female sex isn't. Is that what you '"feminists" call sexualization? If that's your point, then maybe we should further stop the "sexualization" and make breast reduction mandatory for all girls and feed them testosterone so that there is basically no difference between males and females. Because if there is a difference, in your point of views, then there is sexualization.
i have to wonder why to some its not cool to remove crotch hair, but its cool to remove leg hair and arm pit hair...
i believe its simply a part of grooming (if desired)
I would much rather wax my daughter than have her walking around in a swimsuit with pubes showing! If a girl has too much hair on her body I see no reason why waxing it wouldn't be ok. If she is waxing to impress a guy then we need to address some other issues! But if she is old enough (and mature enough) to shave I see no reason to not allow waxing. It is about being comfortable with yourself.
Why would any depilatory/enhancement/grooming choice set back womans's lib?? it's more about it. We are so free, that the under 25ers are getting boob jobs and many paying themselves!! So given the freedeom, if we choose to sexualize ourselves, it it our choice.
Unwanted hair should be removed it it causes embarrasment or discomfort.
Tweens?? Um no, Its just weird there that focused on making that part look more "appealling'. Yes, don't lie to your selves ladys, you get your stuff waxed when you wanna look 'sexier' and nooo other reason.
and i don't know why girls are so embarrassed about a lil body hair! I never was, but then again I shave everything from my thin stache' to my back and boobies and MULTIPLE other surfaces.. But I got some hellish Cherokee in me.
