Would you allow your tween daughter to get a bikini wax or a waxing in general? One waxing franchise is holding a promotion during the month of July -- 50% off of all waxing services for all girls 15 and younger.
The ad has many moms up in arms since it appears to be for a bikini wax (though it specifically says all waxing services), and they think it sexualizes young girls who aren't yet old enough for such a service.
I call bullshit.
As a woman who was a hairy teen, thanks to my Latina genes and hitting puberty, I wish waxing had been more mainstream when I was 12. I may not have had my boobs but I definitely had hair everywhere and it was a real pain trying to hide it. Tube socks and T-shirts over bathing suits only can do so much.

In middle school, swimming was mandatory and my life would have been loads more pleasant if I could have gotten a bikini wax rather than trying to not look like I had a chia pet in a headlock when I wore my bathing suit. It was embarrassing and humiliating to a young teenager.
I don’t think waxing sexualizes girls; it simply gives them a safer alternative to shaving. You don't want to know how many chunks I took out of my ankle when I first started shaving my legs. I'd hate to imagine what damage I could have done with a razor in my pubic area at the tender age of 12 or 13.
The one issue I have with the ad is with this language:
During the month of July, girls 15 and undercan enjoy their FIRST waxing experience and find it NATURAL, SAFE and PLEASANT. [emphasis added]
Let’s be honest, waxing is never "pleasant." Natural and safe, yes, but there is no such thing as pleasurable waxing -- only degrees of pain tolerance. You might want to warn your daughters before they take the plunge.
Do you think it's okay for teen girls to wax?

@urbanfarmermom: We did not evolve this way for asthetic reasons. We evolved this way to keep warm and trap pheromones. For thousands of years now we have evolved to be less hairy, so it seems like your 'woman's movement' is moving backwards. We no longer need hair to keep warm or trap pheromones, it's kind of useless now. So if a woman doesn't like it, why not get rid of it.
Body hair is intrinsically tied to self-esteem for most women. If it's not for you then great, but you don't speak for all women. If you truly are a part of the women movement, then you shouldn't be ashamed or saddened by the struggles women have with self-esteem and body image.
Um, why are tweens even wearing things that show pubic hair?? Sorry, the swim class/dance team excuse is NOT doing it for me. Those are choices, not requirements, they cannot force your child to wear something inappropriate. There is no way, NO WAY my early blooming 11 yr old DD cup daughter is wearing a swim suit that is so skimpy it shows pubes. Just not happening. Even as an adult, I'm not wearing something that revealing,Boyshorts Tankinis with full coverage halter is the least I'll wear. "Modest is Hottest"! Lame, I know. but something I live by.
Body hair knows nothing of modesty. Pubic hair can extend onto the upper thighs, and be incredibly long. How is a suit going to cover thick, wiry hair, sprouting from all seams? And what about panties and changing in the locker room for PE or whatever?
Its not immodest to want a bikini wax. I don't think anyone's talking about a full brazillian so the kid can wear a thong bathin suit. Jeeze.
I'm a professional waxer and I can tell you the earlier the better! When a little girl body change and hit puberty her hormones are going crazy and hair folicules changes rapidly. If she never shave and instead start waxing by the age 30 she'll would have only 20% of her body hair left!
I have no problem with it. There are people that think EVERYTHING is about sex when it comes to the human body. I would have loved to have been able to wax as a teen. Hell, I'd do it now if I could afford it ... actually, I do the lasar hair removal. I hate body hair. Always have.
Oh yes, let's teach our daughters at an even younger age to be ashamed of their bodies as they are designed to be. Let's enable their bowing to the massive amounts of peer pressure to look like a model. Let's tell them that their bodies aren't good enough and that we need to modify ourselves to go swimming. And Mandago, you're wrong - hygeine is not a good reason to go bald, as pubic hair actually functions to protect the genitalia from outside contaminants.
For all those posters who proclaim to be not ashamed of hair, good for you. For those of us with fair skin, dark hair and who developed early, pubic hair can be a nightmare. By the time I was 11, I had pubic hair growing down my thighs and sticking out of my bathing suit. To say it was embarrassing is to put it mildly. I wish I had been able to get waxed as a tween/teen, but made do with an electric trimmer.
if thats what makes her happy, sure.
