Boy Left 'Home Alone' Saves the Day With Quick-Thinking

by Jacqueline Burt on June 22, 2012 at 3:29 PM

hide under bedI hate to think about my kids being in a dangerous situation, but I hope and hope and hope that if they ever were (god forbid!!), they'd know what to do. Like 11-year-old Luis Gutierrez, who did exactly what I'd want my kids to do if they were home alone and somebody broke into the house (god forbid!!). When the boy heard the sound of shattering glass, he didn't wait to find out who or what broke that window -- he ran straight to his room, hid under his bed, and called his dad.

Good thinking, kid! I mean, this is an 11-year-old boy we're talking about here. Faced with intruders, he could have just as easily set a bunch of elaborate booby traps or tried sneaking up behind the thieves with a snow shovel. (Get it? He was Home Alone?!) Anyway, he did the right thing. And so did his dad, who told Luis to call 911. (Can you imagine getting that call from your kid? Help, I'm hiding under the bed cause somebody broke into the house!)

But the best part of this story? Luis didn't just save his own neck by thinking fast ... he stopped the robbers from getting away! Thanks to that 911 call, police arrived just in time to nab the 3 suspects (all of whom are apparently 17 years of age) AND rescue Luis through his bedroom window.

I don't know about you, but I'm definitely planning on having a talk with my kids about what happened to Luis Gutierrez. Main things to remember: Hide. With a phone! The only thing I'd want my kids to do differently would be to call 911 first.

I'm also never leaving my 11-year-old daughter home alone. Maybe freshman year of high school? If she's lucky.

How do you think your kid would react in this situation?

This scares me. My granddaughter just started babysitting. We'll be having a "what would you do" talk.

He didnt have to make a peep. Clever. Now im trying to remember if i read it on here actually lol

Wait, so because a kid responsibly and properly handled a situation, in effect showing you that an 11 year old is perfectly capable of what 11 year olds throughout history and world have been/are doing, that being taking care of themselves and/or siblings while 'home alone', your response is to deny that capablitity in your child until she's old enough to drive?? Oh yeah, that one makes sense. This isn't news, it's normal behavior for an 11 year old.

Maybe its me but I feel that he is a little young to be home alone. Even though I was mature for my age at 11 (I was raised by my great grandparents), they wouldn't leave me home alone til I was around 13/14. It wasnt that they didnt trust me; they didnt want something like this to happen to me.

I hope my daughter would never have to go through this but if so I hope she does the same thing. Hid under the bed and call for help.

Um 11 is an appropriate age to be home alone and in fact the legal age is CA is 9. When I was 11 I would've known to call the police and in fact would have done so before calling my parent. 11 is not 5 he wasn't a baby and no offense to the kid but I hardly think this is news worthy.. plus, why didn't the dad call the police? Left his kid to do it, just saying. Would also like to point out that the author is heavily over dramatizing this .. the intruders were 17, they probably were unarmed and had no intentions of hurting anyone. I'm sure they just wanted to steal some things to pawn for god only knows what but I'm not 100% convinced that had they seen the kid that they would have in any way injured him.
