What makes a family? Laura, her partner Lisa, and their 8-year-old daughter Mya are proof that you can have a family without a mom AND a dad -- in fact, the only essential ingredient in making a family is love. Seems obvious, right? Not to everybody, unfortunately. There are still plenty of people who look at Laura, Lisa and Mya as more of a curiousity than a family. Comparisons are made, says Lisa, to what people call "traditional" families. But she doesn't think her family isn't like or unlike traditional families ...
"Our family is two people who are devoted to each other, who respect each other, who love each other ... who brought a child into the world and both people give 100% to that child," she says.
Not only does that sound like a family, that sounds like an amazing family. Every child should be as lucky as Mya!
Do you know any families like Mya, Laura and Lisa?

Obviously TorranceMom, you don't understand that it IS hateful to call someone's family disgusting. You can disagree with it all you want but there is no need for that.
@TorranceMom: how about if I don't agree with something about your lifestyle? Can I then butt in and pass laws limiting your freedom? How are we all agree that your rights end at the tip of your nose, and butt out of other people's lives. They are providing a loving home for this little girl, how is it your right to stick your nose into their business?
Saying "No, I'm not a hateful bigot" before making a hateful comment reminds me of when people say "no offense" and then say something offensive. I've never grasped why people think that is ok.
What a beautiful, caring family. I'd be willing to bet that child does have male figures in her life, just not a dad, and I think thats a-ok!
TorranceMom - it was her choice of her words that make her come off as a bigot. There is no need to call a happy family disguting. If she had merely said I don't agree with this and find it upsetting, I wouldn't think of her as hateful.
"We devote our lives to Mya to make sure Mya has the opportunity to be the best person she can be."
This is an excellent, important show about a HEALTHY family, full of life and love. There are all kinds of healthy families, as both Lisa and Laura explain so well.
Mya's happy, open, bright face says it all. Can't wait to see the rest!
