'The Avengers': Should Your Kids See This Movie?

by Jeanne Sager on May 4, 2012 at 8:33 AM

Thor captain americaIt's opening night of The Avengers nationwide, and you can bet the teenagers will be lining up outside theaters ready for their fix of the hot new superhero flick. And the younger kids want to be right there with them. The last Halloween in most neighborhoods brought us a sea of little Iron Mans and wee Captain America look-alikes running around town. These are their heroes too.

But is The Avengers really a kids movie? That depends ... on your kid. You know them better than anyone. But we're throwing you a lifeline. We've seen the movie (and loved it), and we know what to watch out for with your kids. Here's a guide to help you decide if you'll be hitting the theaters or staying home this weekend:

Violence: It kind of goes without saying that a movie about superheroes will include fighting, doesn't it? There is a lot of it, and this isn't cartoon violence either. But it's violence with a point. These superheroes are trying to save the world from the bad guys; it's not being done just for kicks.

Death: Most of the bad guys are killed quickly, and the actual death throes happen off-screen. The bigger focus, Moms and Dads, is the one major character who dies onscreen. He's a character kids will connect with in a major way -- I won't tell you more because I don't want to ruin a rather pivotal moment for you -- and his death is quite emotional.

Cursing: With a PG-13 rating, you know there would be some. But the first third to half of the movie goes by curse-free, and there are no F-bombs to worry about! Most of the cuss words are limited to "da--" and "hell," and it's not gratuitous. The worst it gets is a "sonuvab--ch" and a mention of a particular person being "buck a-- naked" (you don't see that, by the way, and it's not sexual).

Suicide: If your kids are familiar in any way with the story of the Incredible Hulk, they know Dr. Bruce Banner is not happy to turn into a green monster when he gets angry. But a mention that he once tried to shoot himself in the mouth as a means to end the Hulk's reign over his body may be hard to explain to your kids. It's a very quick reference, and your kids may forget all about it, but it's worth being prepared anyway.

So there you have it: what you need to know when your kiddos come storming into the room with their LEGO magazine with The Avengers cover and saying, "I wanna see it!"

What have your kids been saying about the movie? Will you be seeing The Avengers tonight?

My son can't wait to go. So as soon as he's out of school and hubby and I are out of work we'll be going. And then if I know my hubby and kid, they'll probably go another two or three times during the weekend.

Yup! My 4y/o is going today. My hubby is surprising him at preschool. Then he is going tomorrow night as well with my hubbys friend and his son. My son knows if something is too violent. There was a Hulk cartoon that has Hulk beating the crap out of Wolverine, I was sitting there thinking umm this isn't good and my son says I don't like this, good, we will delete it. We screen things more closely, but I am also a believer in shows don't make a kid violent, parenting does. I can't wait to see this myself! Thanks for the heads up though! Who dies, I am already sad.

We homeschool so my husband is taking the boys this morning at 11:30 to see it. They've seen all the movies leading up to this. They don't know that my husband bought tickets yesterday to take them today. I can't wait to see the looks on their faces!! I want to go see it too, but the last time I went to the movies, it was so loud it gave me a migraine. We might go to the drive-in on Sunday night so I can see it without my head exploding.

Thanks for this great recap. My son won't be seeing it, probably for a couple of years. Even though he's 8, he is extremely sensitive about movies; he gets personally involved, and is actually traumatized when the good guys get hurt. But I love that you lay everything out so well, but without spoilers.

You can BET that I'll be seeing it, though. I'll just have to wait for Netflix!

Our young son (3 1/2) *loves* superheros, all superheros. We screen movies first but we're more concerned with torture, cruelity, sexuality, and agressive cursing than with standard 'get the bad guy' violence. So far he has seen the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and after some debate Captain America. So we are hoping the Avengers will be ok for him.

I'm going to see it today, and will most likely take my girls to see it next weekend.  They seen all except Captain America (I'm going to watch it with them this weekend).  My 8 year old is so excited to see it!  She's a comic book nerd like her father, LOL!

It's just a movie!!! kids now it is, and you will be right there with them. Cartoons also have a lot of violence and double entendres (spelled correct).

DD enjoyed it so much and is not traumatized at all,and moms can enjoy all those beautiful biceps!!!
