6 Great Children's Books Written by Celebrities

by Jeanne Sager on June 2, 2012 at 9:24 AM

child readingThe last time I walked through the kid's section at a bookstore, I wanted to cry. They let John Travolta write a children's book. And Tyra Banks too (it's about a would-be model named Tookie De La Crème, and no, I'm not kidding). And Glenn Beck for crying out loud.

It seems like all you have to do to get a contract to write for kids is to show up at a publishing house, wave your hand and say "Hey, I'm a celebrity!" Snooki is expected to put hers out any day now (OK, not really ... at least, God ... no ... please, just no). So you could be depressed about the state of kids literature. Or you could look on the bright side.

There are actually some celebrities whose books for kids ... wait for it ... don't totally suck. Some of them are even kind of good if you ask me.

Want to know what's worth putting on the bookshelf beside the Velveteen Rabbits and the Anne of Green Gables? Here are a few shockers worth checking out.

What is your favorite children's book penned by a celebrity?

Playground by 50 Cent

50 Cent, aka Curtis Jackson, may be a hardcore rapper, but he's also a dad. And it's for his teenage son and the thousands of kids who deal with bullying that he wrote Playground, an insightful look at how bullied kids become the bullies.

Nope, sorry. Not going to look at a slide show. It is sooooo annoying to look at a sideshow.

I hate the slide shows, too.... I'm almost always reading from my phone, so slide shows suck, big time. Protest!

I always read from my phone and I like the slideshows. What's more annoying are all the inevitable comments saying they hate slideshows and they refuse to read articles with slideshows but want to make sure in the comments section they let everyone know how much they hate slideshows.

The slide shows are alright I can view them fine on my iPod touch but they're an inconvenience I'd rather scroll down to see

Am I the only person for whom the page loads almost instantly, in the exact same spot I scrolled down on the page? I didn't even notice that it was a new page until I saw commentors griping.

Anyways, I just wanted to mention I always see Jeff Foxworthy's Dirt on My Shirt going in and out of the library where I work, so someone must like these celebrity kid's books.

My husband bought my daughter Flanimals and I hate it--it's very negative and mean-spirited.

I like the series Henry Winkler writes, I guess it's for slightly older children than these, but it's actually gotten my brother reading for fun and that almost never happens.
