Just when you think you've heard it all, a 10-year-old girl goes and delivers her baby sister. I'm serious! Fifth-grader Stephanie Zamora was in the car with her parents while they were on their way to the hospital for mom to give birth when things started getting a little dicey. See, before they got to their destination, Stephanie's mom had the uncontrollable urge to push. So, Stephanie did what most no 10-year-old would do: She stepped up and played the role of midwife. And, shockingly, everything went off without a hitch.
Stephanie saw the baby coming out and called 911. The dispatcher on the other end gave her instructions on how to deliver the baby/what to do afterwards ("Put the baby on her belly and make sure the cord isn't wrapped around her neck"), and Stephanie translated the directions to her parents. That's a lot of pressure for a 10-year-old kid! But Stephanie remained calm, cool, and collected from start to finish. Check this girl out:

Ain't no thing, right? She just helped deliver her baby sister, that's all. Nothin' to see here. Keep on movin'. ("I just got the baby out.") I mean, what?! I am seriously impressed with this girl. Not sure I'd be able to remain so poised if put in a similar position. Stephanie was on top of things. Her mother is seriously lucky she was in the car with her. And so is her baby sister -- who, by the way, will probably never hear the end of this for as long as she lives.
How impressive is Stephanie? Do you have a story of not making it to the hospital in time?

my great aunt helped to deliver or delivered half of her 13 siblings. (I depends on her age but nothing is cooler/weirder than having an anchent woman tell you about your grandfather's birth! She was incharge of the hot water and clean cloth and it's her earlist memory.) We forget that adolescence was made up in the last 50 or so years and that kids are supriesingly capable. I think because they adjust to things pretty quickly. She's still amazing and I'm sure that calm head will serve her well her whole life.
Come on comf, don't you know chidbirth is sooooo incredibly dangerous and everyone needs brave doctors and shiny equipment to save you from it. ::eyeroll::
I hope this girl grows up to be a midwife- what a story!
This is actually a common practice in some poorer countries. My friend actually assisted her mother in all of her younger siblings birth. Her mother would give her directions on what to do. She was not an educated women, but she sure knew how to deliver babies. Yes, sometimes the women or and infant she assisted did die....but those were few and far between. She was the neighborhood midwife who with her preschoolers assistance dilivered her brood.
