Every year, we are subject to the rantings about the "war on Christmas." It's a ridiculous straw man argument and almost laughably absurd to say that there is a war on Christmas, and this mock PSA from The Huffington Post gets it.
Guess what: Kids will not die or become depressed because they say "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas." In fact, inclusion is a much more important lesson than any that Santa Claus or railing against the "war" on Christmas could ever be.
See below:
Real problems for kids include poverty, lack of food, water, educational opportunities, and even real war. This made up "war on Christmas" is so silly and no child has ever been hurt by such a thing.
Most of those who complain about this "war" are also the ones stocking up at Wal-mart on plastic toys for Christmas morning. Personally, I worry far more about having greedy and materialistic children than I do about having children who recognize that everyone celebrates holidays differently and everyone deserves a friendly greeting.
If you celebrate Christmas with your children, then more power to you. It's a lovely, warm holiday with many good things. But saying "happy holidays" in no way undermines the celebration of Christmas. It only makes it better because everyone stays happy.
I don't want to teach my kids to be always politically correct because there is a time for honesty and realism, too. But it isn't idealistic or silly to be inclusive. It's intelligent. I would hate to have hateful, angry children who don't know how to be inclusive and kind.
Do you think this PSA is funny?

Oh my god! (yeah, I said it, and I'm not capitalizing it, either!), I love this so much I want to marry it! My kids will get a kick out of this. Great point about the ones crying "war" (and we know christians love a good war) being the same ones shoppping like crazy! The funny thing is, if they played this on TV, a whole lot of people (including Rick Perry) would never know it was a joke! Season's Greetings!
Saying happy holidays is just good manners. Some people celebrate more than one holiday. Some people you just don't know what they choose to celebrate. Some celebrate nothing at all. Happy holidays covers all those bases.
As for Tebow, people poke fun at him because he insists on bringing his religion in to everything. He isn't paid to preach, he is paid to play football. When people interview him he should be talking about football, not harping on about his religious beliefs. People would make just as much fun of him if he were harping on about how much his wife means to him or about his lucky socks.
Holy. F. Saying 'Merry Christmas' doesn't undermine YOUR holiday. And no child has ever been hurt by being told 'Merry Christmas'. You can respond with 'Happy Hanukkah" or Kwanza or Holiday or Giant Purple Octopus day and I will not take offense to it or go home and cry myself to sleep about how I don't feel included. It's not that serious. It has nothing to do with being hateful or angry or not recognizing that other holidays are existing. It has to do with the fact that THIS is the holiday we're celebrating and we're going to acknowledge it, just as you are more than welcome to acknowlege yours. Inclusion is about accepting everyones differences and NOT about forcing everyone to be the same!!!
BTW - My kids aren't christian, and they say Merry Christmas - we all do! And we just last night had his public school's christmas program, and listened to christmas, hanukkah and kwanzaa themed songs which, as HW pointed out, were all equally silly, and had a good time.
I LOVE THIS and I can't wait to show it to my teens. Hilarious!
Also, @HW - ditto to everything you said. Great response!
Billsfan, where in the post is the writer intolerant of Christians? This is getting so ridiculous. I am Christian and I say Happy Holidays if I do not know what someone celebrates. I also honestly do not see all of this Christian bashing you continually talk about. But again, I am also a Christian who is pro-choice and am stongly in support of gay marriage, issues that often bring up the 'supposed' bashing. My issue with Tim Tebow is that I feel that his actions are starting to affect others and yes I do believe that we should all be tolerant of each other and that is why I say Happy Holidays if I do not know someone's religion.
