Parents Lose Custody of Son Named 'Adolf Hitler'

by Julie Ryan Evans on October 26, 2011 at 11:14 PM

naziA few years back, a New Jersey family was in the news because a bakery didn't like their kid's name and wouldn't put it on his birthday cake. It sounds outrageous ... until you learn that the little boy's is Adolf Hitler Campbell. Then the store's refusal makes a whole lot of sense, as does a court decision today that denied the boy's parents custody of him and his two siblings -- JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie.

The question is whether Heath and Deborah Campbell have lost custody of their children just because of the names they bestowed upon them or because of something else. The children have been in foster care since the incident, and the courts say there is evidence of abuse or neglect (details can't be released due to a gag order). The Campbells, however, contend it's just because of the names, and that their freedom of expression has been thwarted. Heath told NBC 10:

Actually, the judge and DYFS told us that there was no evidence of abuse and that it was the names. They were taken over the children's names.

Honestly, even if it was just over the names, I'd almost say that's grounds enough for those children to be removed. I'm a passionate proponent of free speech, even when I don't like it, but bestowing a name that evokes such hatred and violence is just cruel and I think perhaps a form of abuse.

Yes, there's a lot of subjectivity when it comes to what is and isn't an acceptable name for a child, but there's really no gray when it comes to Adolf Hitler. Plus, you know that anyone who would name their child something like this is very likely mentally unstable and filled with hate.

Still, taking children away from their parents just for a distasteful name? I'm not sure I could fully support that, but I bet there are few cases in which a parent who chooses to name their child something like that wouldn't have other issues as well. So while it's disturbing to think the children were subjected to treatment worse than their names, at least they have been removed from it for now. And in a way those horrible names saved them, because no one may have been wiser to the abuse if they hadn't had them.

Do you think these parents should lose custody of their children because of their names?

your child's name is not the place to make a statement...
also, you normally name your children after someone you love and respect. how in the world could you love or respect a mass murderer?!

IF they were removed soley because of the names, then I believe there has been a miscarriage of justice. No, I do not think that Adolph Hitler is a good name, and I wouldn't saddle my child with it. But neither would I saddle my child with "Moon Unit" (Zappa) or "Apple" (Paltrow) or "Inspektor Pilot" (some rock star). I get that none of them are named for killer-despot-dictators, but all are hideous names, in my opinion. It's yet another slippery slope when the state starts taking children away based on name alone.

I suspect that the abuse charges were not unfounded, and that is why they were really removed. The names were just the...um...icing on the cake...

Yeah, I am sure they named them for what they believe in and they most likely would teach them hatred. They probably had more reasons than just the names though.

How dare you say they deserve to have their children taken away because of their poor taste in names. So many more children would be forced into foster care if we judged people's parenting skills solely on the names they choose for their children. Shame on you. They need to worry more about children that are actually being abused.

I think it's weird that they would remove them so long after the cake incident that garnered so much attention. However, I do question the assertion that the kids were taken only for their names. I remember watching an interview with the parents back when that cake issue became national news and they looked like major meth head tweakers to me. I would not be shocked if there were issues of drugs in the family.

Dameon means demon. People name their kids that all the time. I wouldn't name my kids either one.

Any parent who would knowingly name 3 (!!!) children such wackedout crazy names, probably is also going to have other parenting issues, unfortunately. So I'd say that the kids were probably taken due to some other abuse or something of that sort.

If they were removed solely for their names, it is appalling.

Sorry, but I just don't trust someone who names their kid Adolf Hitler. Nazi's weren't exactly known for their honesty. So I highly doubt these children did not suffer some form of abuse.
