There are two camps of mothers: Those who cry on the first day of school, and those who rejoice with the “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” commercial from Staples playing gleefully in their heads. Not surprisingly, my kids start this week and I've already started dancing. Turns out, I'm not alone in my glee about solo trips to Target and phone calls in peace.
Here's what some of my fellow moms are celebrating about the start of the school year ...
1. "Getting to drink a *hot* coffee. Not warm, hot." Carolyn, Hooked and Happy
2. "Having the pool to myself and able to work on my all over tan!" Beth
3. "Being able to do what I want, when I want, and where I want for 7 hours!" Kristin
4. "I get the PS3, Wii & Xbox all to myself." Jasmine, Fashion Grail
5. "I stuff my face with food I ban in their presence while they're at school." Erin, I'm Gonna Kill Him
6. "Having sex in the middle of the day!!!!" Adrianna
7. "I don't have to wipe the kids' asses when they poop or listen to the WHINING!!" Rachel, Mommy Needs a Vacation
8. "The decrease in the decibel level in the house." Kim
9. "That I can clean out the toys and make things disappear without anyone noticing!" Rebecca
10. "The kitchen is no longer an all you can eat snack bar and the basement is no longer a crash pad for Disney girl drama." Rebecca, Random Thoughts by Rebecca
11. "Finally getting a bikini wax without an audience!" Jessica, A Parent in Silver Spring
12. "That second cup of coffee ... in PEACE!" Chrissy, Life As a CEO
13. "No more beach sand tracked across the wood floors, crunched into the car rugs, or spilling from the lint trap in the dryer!" Andrea, Gold Coast Mama
14. "I can eat whatever I damn well please for breakfast and/or lunch. Over a wrapper. In front of the computer while it's playing profanity-laced or boring-science-filled YouTube videos." Kimberly, Arizona Writer
15. "I will no longer be forced to eat their leftover lunches. Okay I'm kind of gonna miss that ... but my ass won't." Kathy, Mama's Losin' It

So you would have a problem by the size 7 boot print on the back of my kids backs? I miss my kids and would probably homeschool them if one wasn't smarter than me and the other wasn't so obstinate (why do they save this fun for mommy???) It certainly would make the food allergy thing easier. But it's not fair to them because in some ways, this is real life and they will have to negotiate it eventually.
This is my kid's first year and I think the BIGGEST and most precious gem about school is an early bedtime. By the time 7 rolls around, a warm bath and being tucked in with her stuffed animals sounds like the best thing in the world to her. And being able to look at a relatively clean house for a whole 7 hours is pretty amazing as well! lol
I hope your children don't ever find out how much you want them gone.
My entering-puberty 9 year old is going back to school, let them deal with the drama... and my 3 year old is going to preschool, sure I'll miss him but that means I get some one on one time with my 18 month old!!!!
and just to those parents who think I'm being mean by wishing my kids back to school... My daughter benefits too from time away from me. We are able to take a step back from the drama and more enjoy the time we do have together.
Peace and Quiet! Not having to hear the door open and close 10 million times a day. Not having the baby wake up b/c they cant keep their yelling contained, Not hearing them fight with each other all day long. Keeping the freezer un locked in fear of them eatting every popcile in the house. Not hearing my 8 year old scream at the wii b.c it wont go the right way but he doesnt realize that HE is controlling it.
To the women who implied that we are horrible people who just want to get rid of their kids - get over yourselves! Just because we are glad to see the kids get out and get educated and socialized does not mean we hate or even dislike them. Or that it doesn't make us very glad to see them when they get home. Some time to ourselves can actually make most of us us better parents, and give our kids a chance to think for themselves in an environment that makes it possible for them to do so.
To the author of this article: you left a third camp of moms out, the ones that homeschool and don't have to cry watching thier little ones going to school or get happy b/c thier kids are back in school. Homeschool is def. NOT for everyone but I am thankful for the opportunity and freedom to do so.
With that being said, here's my answer to your question. I'm excited there are kids are going back to school b/c we have emptier parks and museums, we have awesome school supply sales that we can take advantage of b/c we aren't on a school supply deadline, and my kid's friends are back in school so I can spend more time w/my kids!! YAY for school!!!! :)
There can be too much of a good thing...and we all have it by the time summer comes to an end. I have 4 kids; second grade down to a 2 month old, and its nice to get everyone seperated for a few hours. Makes the reunion that much sweeter and so far the "hey I had that lego" and the "Mom, I'm bored" or "I want my alone time"s few and far between (atleast for right now)
