Police in Lakewood, Colorado recently used pepper spray to take down an out-of-control second grader ... Hold your gasps because I'm about to make your gasp really worth it. This 8-year-old left police no choice and he totally had it coming ... Hold your fire until you hear what happened.
According to 9news.com in Colorado, this student from Glennon Heights Elementary freaked the hell out. Spitting, throwing chairs and a television, trying to stab his teachers with a piece of wood trim off the wall, and threatening to kill them -- this kid flipped out so hardcore that his teachers barricaded themselves in a room and called the police.
And it didn't end there ...
So police arrived on the scene and the kid kept it up and refused to drop the sharp stick. This is definitely not normal behavior for a second grader. Defy his teachers, maybe. But with such violence? And murderous threats? And then to keep it up once the police arrive too? This kid was totally out of control and needs help.
An interview with the boy identified as Aidan and his mom Mandy (see below) reveals this was the third time cops have been called to the school due to his violent outbursts. Mom thinks, however, the use of pepper spray was excessive:
I'm sure what he was doing wasn't right, but he's 8 years old. They walked in, asked him to drop the stick, and then sprayed him with the spray ... I think it's excessive.
Yeah, he is only 8 years old, Mandy, but he is displaying the kind of rage and violence that cops usually only see in adults flipping out on PCP.
I'm no advocate for excessive force, especially on a child, but what choice did police really have in this case? If they put their hands on him and tried to restrain him with physical force, everyone would be completely up in arms, and had they used a stun gun to shock the kid, the police would have gotten far worse criticism.
WATCH the news report, which includes the interview with Aidan and his mom.
This is a boy in serious trouble, and I worry that his mom might be in slight denial about the severity of his problem. I feel for the woman, believe me, and I imagine it's hard to see how very bad a situation is when you're used to living with it. I just hope Aidan and his mom continue to get the help they need.
Based on the details we have here, do you think pepper spray was the right option?

The FIRST time this happened, they should've transfered him to a more specialized school. If the teachers themselves cannot handle the child, imagine how his classmates are affected. Pepper spray doesn't seem to have hurt him a bit, so I think the police were completely justified. The good news is, he's getting treatment.
That mom makes me very angry. "I'm sure that what he was doing wasn't right....".... uhhh, no sh**. That kid's "I have anger issues, it's just who I am, it will probably never go away.".... way to teach a kid how to take responsibility for his actions.
After seeing the news feed, moms the problem, not the school, not the cops. You would think that your son having the cops called on him the first time would be a sign that he needs serious help.
What on earth sort of home life does this kid have that would cause him to be THIS violent???? He needs some serious psychological help, and to be seperated from other children for their own protection. I think the police did the right thing
This mom is going to baby her child right into prison after he seriously hurts or kills someone. As sad as it is that the police had to pepper spray a child, they did the right thing. I have worked for yearsl in a behavior rehabilitaion facility for boys ages 7-17 for kids just like this... talking them done rarely happens... they will escalate until they charge you with that sharp stick and you have to take drastic measures to defend yourself, or they turn the weapon on themselves and do real harm. And physical restrain on a child this size can result in broken bones or dislocated shoulders, etc... The rule in my state has been 3 lbs for every 1 lb of perpetrator, so you would need nearly 300 lbs of grown men to take down this kid... rush a kid with that and someone will get hurt... This child needs therapy, meds and for someone to slap that mom upside the head!!!!
I think this is bull. I mean yea the kid has problems, but he should not have been pepper sprayed! We had a kid in our class who would do this sort of thing. He had a mental problem and would have violent outburst. He broke our teachers arm throwing a desk once. When he started they would send us all outside so he was the only one in the room first. Then the teachers were trained how to wrap their arms around him from behind, pinning his arms down. This held him to where he couldn't hurt anyone until he calmed down or until the on campus officer came to take him. And that was when we were in 5th grade, I'm sure it's MUCH easier to restrain a 2nd grader!
This kid needs INPATIENT PSYCHIATRIC HELP. His mom better get it for him before he decides to hurt hurt. Kids turn into teenagers and when this kid is 15 and has hormones raging he WILL lash out, and she will be the one who gets hurt. I understand wanting to back up your children no matter what, but it's time for her to see there IS a problem and take care of it, before someone gets hurt.
@musicmomma -- I can just see these teachers trying to restrain this kid-- as soon as they do they will be sued or arrested for assault. They did the right thing and so did the cops. Mom needs to step and and be responsible.
