Virginia police have issued an Amber Alert for 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith who is missing after her mother was found dead.
According to ABC News, she may be in the custody of a hulking man who police also want to interview about her mother's death. According to reports:
Police, who have issued an Amber Alert for Brittany, asked motorists to be on the lookout for a 2005 silver Dodge Neon with the Virginia tag XKR-2365. They are also hoping that Brittany is able to use her cell phone and send a message to one of her friends who she is normally is daily contact with.
"We are extremely concerned with Brittany's safety and we've asked the state police to continue with the Amber Alert for another 24 hours," Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said at a press conference. The officer said, however, that police believe Brittany is alive.
According to Roanoke County spokeswoman Teresa Hamilton Hall, Brittany may be with Jeffrey Scott Easley, a friend of Brittany's mother, Tina Smith. He also may have lived at the home with the girl for some time.
When the mother failed to show up for work, the authorities went to the home and found the mother dead and the girl missing. Investigators say the 41-year-old mother's death is being looked at as a possible homicide. An autopsy is expected Tuesday.
Brittany is described as 5 feet tall, 100 pounds with straight brown hair and brown eyes. Easley is described as 5-foot-11, 265 pounds, and they suspect he may be headed toward North Carolina.
Many hopes that this little girl is returned safe and sound to her family.
