On Election Day, my son's elementary school PTA had a major bake sale which included cakes, pies, cookies and the sort donated from school-loving moms. There were goodies galore, more than one tummy should ever hold, but all for a purpose--(on a day it was closed) the school raised $3500.
There weren't any Election Day school bake sales in California though. The state has recently adopted nutrition guidelines that "strictly limit the fat, sugar, and calorie intake of all food sold at schools during school days"--before and after school, reports CBS News.
Some California schools are making no exceptions doing away with nachos, hot dogs, soda and other non-nutritious foods. Piedmont High School is one of them, says principal Randall Booker. Today there is a zero tolerance policy for what used to be a campus tradition. "I love the bake sales," he said in the CBS report. "I eat them myself. But there are state laws that we just have to abide by."
Does your child's school have bake sales? Do you agree with the new California State law banning them?

I love bake sales, I kind of understand why they are doing this. But maybe they could make some exemptions for afterschool activities. That is what they do at my daughter's school. They do it for the Halloween carnival, and it works out well.
Also, our district has taken everything to the extreme. No home made food of any kind is allowed. So the Kindergarten tradition of Thanksgiving Feast will have to be DRASTICALLY modified. The teachers are talking about having to get individual servings of applesauce. Sheesh.
I am pretty strict about what goes into my children mouths but would never deprive them of the occasional treat that's crazy
well Ohio, NC, and now VA have all adopted the same guidelines. I am the wrong person to ask, I do understand their reasoning behind it but the $$ made on bake sales is amazing....so as a PTSA officer I find it disheartening. Also snacks sent in are also all prepackaged....kind of defeats the "mommy-child" time of baking cupcakes to send into the school for a b-day or a class party.
I think in todays economy that its sad, we get less donations because its cheaper for a parent to make 2 dozen cupcakes then buy them so they just don't send them in now (and cupcakes are just an example).
Oh well I guess "times are changing"
I used to live in CA and the obesity rate there is crazy so I can understand them taking these drastic measures.
In CO, when my son was in public school then every fund-raiser was food based. Bread-braids, cookie dough (that can sit on a counter for a month?!?), bake sales... the list goes on. I talked to them about doing some non-food related fundraising and the reaction I got you would think I had suggested performing ritual sacrifice or something.
Well, that's my two cents.
