Photo from PeopleI followed the Elizabeth Smart abduction case closely in 2002 and 2003. What a marvelous day it was when she, then 14 years old, was found 9 long months after her kidnapping -- alive!
So it's really nice to see that a federal judge ordered Wanda Barzee, 64, the female kidnapper in Elizabeth's case, to prison. Unfortunately, though, Barzee was only sentenced to 15 years, and she's already served 7.
Gosh, seems pretty light to me...
Barzee pleaded guilty to federal charges of kidnapping Smart, as well as to unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines. She will also testify against her now-estranged husband, Brian David Mitchell, the man who kidnapped Smart at knifepoint and held her in captivity for 9 months.
The sentence, only lasting another 8 years, does seem short to me although Barzee will be 72 years old by the time she is released. Of course, for all the trauma and terror that Smart had to endure once she was kidnapped, I'd like to see her kidnappers rot in jail.
The trial for Mitchell, 56, is scheduled to begin in November.
In cases like Smart's and that of Jaycee Lee Duggard, where there were female accessories in the kidnapping, do you think they should receive the same sentence as the lead kidnapper?
