In other words, just like so many odd, backward decisions made in this country, the people have voted to take out the toy instead of the high-fat foods.
I guess removing the toy does take away the allure of the friendly kids meals (and believe me, I'm not going to protest cheap plastic toy bans anytime soon). However, if the point is that we want restaurants to serve healthier foods, shouldn't we put a ban on the fattening foods rather than on the toys?
Once passed, this ordinance will make it mandatory for restaurants to either offer a healthier meal with the toys or take the toys out altogether. Hmmm. But the world loves fast food! Does anyone really think cheeseburger-and-French-fry-loving families are going to give up buying kiddie meals just because there's no toy inside anymore?
Madeline Holler at Babble says, "There’s no way the companies will give up the cross-promotional toys. Now we get to see what they come up with for less than 500 calories, only 10% from sugar (including drink!), and 600 mg of salt."
I guess she's right. This ban might be hitting fast food companies in the money belt; however, I'm doubting that's going to do what the city's hoping. We all watched Food Revolution, and when given a choice, kids opt for the bad stuff -- and frankly, don't many of us busy parents often concur? Isn't our only real option if we want nutritional change to offer better meals?
What do you think of this recent ban? Would you still order your kids Happy Meals if they don't have the toys inside?

I blogged about this too. Do you think this will work?
Here's my post http://www.mommygaga.com/2010/04/toys-banned-from-unhealthy-kids-meals.html
This is too bad, I really liked the toys in the Happy Meals. I guess I'll have to get my kicks at http://www.mcserved.com/
Nooo! Don't get rid of the toys with the happy meal. That makes it happy!
I like it. Now if you want a toy you have to get a better version of crap, but hey its a better version and no I don't like banning foods and that type of thing, seems to socialist, but for some reason banning toys that go with bad foods doesn't bother me.... odd I know. I actually think this is a decent idea. Not banning the bad foods (I don't like banning things that people have free willpower) but banning the incentive that kids have to want to buy the bad food and requiring the incentive to go with the better version..... Granted my son has only had one happy meal and hes two (we were traveling, chicken nuggts and apple slices and milk...) so I have pretty much no stake in this but it sounds good to me.
should read "have free will to buy"
No! does freedom mean nothing to people any more? If McDonalds wants to tuck a piece of crappy plastic in with their little heart attack in a bag meals, that's up to them.
I don't want government regulating what i can eat. or what combinations I can purchase food in. We are being "Well wished" into a nanny state. It's giving the government too much power entirely!
I'm mixed on this...I just wish they would stop running commercials...I DO NOT allow my son to eat fast food but it's getting harder cuz of their stupid commercials showing what toys they are offering.....
My daugther eats Chicken Nuggets and Apples (no caramel and only from McDonalds) and she doesn't get the toy because I don't give it to her. I don't feel giving them to her only to have her play with it once than leaving it laying around. So I either give it back to them or throw it away.
I think it's insane. I order the 'Happy Meal', not my child. And yes- if I were eating out I would *obviously* still be buying something to feed my family. Hal the time my son goes and throws the toy away himself.
The only way I see this actually being a deterent would be for children who are old enough to go in and buy their meal themselves. And I beleive that by the time most children hit that age- they aren't buying the kids meal anyway!
I agree with ethans_momma, although I do have to say, my 19 year old was buying happy meals for the toy a few years ago.
