Yes, This New Mom Is in Hospital Panties & It's the Postpartum Pic She Wants the World to See

New mom postpartum

After Nat gave birth to her first child, her husband snapped a photo as she held baby Delilah. This photo wasn't a staged newborn pic or filtered family portrait -- instead it's a candid postpartum snapshot in a Miami hospital room of a swollen mom, in hospital panties, with her body exposed, cradling her baby -- and it's the newborn photo she decided to share with the world. Given her open robe, why would Nat post this picture? Because this is what a real, glowing, postpartum mom looks like.

"You can see all the cellulite on my fat legs. My stomach looks huge, like I am still pregnant," Nat wrote on Instagram. "My ankles are so swollen they look like logs. You can see the pad in my unflattering hospital panties."

Nat knows that she isn't wearing any makeup and that her hair hasn't been brushed for days, but she still did what many wouldn't dream of: She made such a private photo public and wants everyone to know exactly why. "This is REAL. THIS IS CHILDBIRTH. You will not bounce back once that baby comes out of you," she wrote. "You will not 'lose the baby weight' super quickly. Your ankles will still be swollen and your belly will still be round. And there's NOTHING wrong with that."

It doesn't matter if you have a vaginal birth or a planned C-section, Nat hopes that new moms realize what a massive deal it is when you bring a new life into this world. The moments after should be celebrated instead of hidden or forgotten. "I asked my husband to take this photo because it was the first time I stood up in days and the first time I held my baby all by myself, without wires connecting me to a bed," she wrote. "This moment was so beautiful, I got to sway side to side while holding the life I sustained for nine months."

In this instant, Nat didn't care that her robe was open or that you see her "chunky legs" and the "ugly hospital panties," and now, months later, she still doesn't. "All I cared about was that I was a mother now; and that I was head over heels in love with this little human," she wrote.

However, that doesn't mean that Nat is in love with every inch of her body, and she isn't going to pretend that she is. This difference is that she refuses to let those feelings overshadow her pure gratitude. "I am not happy with how my body looks but I am immensely grateful for what it has done," she wrote. "It grew a life out of a few cells. It labored for 26 hours and it was opened on a table to bring that life into this world."

So instead of focusing on the fact that she had to have an emergency C-section when her birth plan didn't work out, or zeroing in on the stretch marks that started popping up 25 weeks into her pregnancy, she's cherishing this moment that she'll never get back. "I share this photo because it's REAL, beautiful, and in this moment I felt LOVE and happiness," she wrote.

As Nat shared in another post, her body may never look like it did before she had Delilah, but with that beautiful baby in her arms, she simply doesn't give a sh*t. "I look at my belly and think 'damn! I'm a f*cking warrior. I'm a force to be reckoned with. I am a strong, powerful woman and I can do anything,'" she wrote."/.... It's time to take back postpartum ... Let's start empowering our fellow mamas because being a woman is a goddamn amazing gift we have been given."
