1. Snorkeling. At night. With bioluminescent sea creatures. Find a kid-friendly tour, and don’t forget your underwater camera!

2. Indoor skydiving is a much safer alternative to hurtling yourselves out of a plane from 12,000 feet, and many facilities will take fliers as young as 3 years old.

3. At the other extreme, go deep in the earth on a cavern tour or, for older kids, a daring cave rappel. There’s truly nothing like it in the world.

4. Get wet and wild with your choice of water adventure, whether that means a kayak trip across a placid mountain lake or an in-your-face tumble through raging rapids.

5. Extreme obstacle courses (think Spartan Race, Mud Run, and Superhero Scramble) are held all over the country, and many have courses designed just for kids. Race together or take turns cheering each other on from the sidelines. For an indoor option, find an American Ninja Warrior–style gym to test your skills.

6. Families who enjoy hiking can push their limits by adding fire or ice to the mix. Have you ever climbed an active volcano in Hawaii or trekked across a glacier in Alaska? If not, lace up your boots, book your tickets, and get going!

7. Instead of “car camping” on air mattresses at a site with flushable toilets just a short walk away, push your limits and go backpacking with just the gear you can carry yourselves. Cook over an open flame, sleep under the stars, and enjoy what it feels like to be truly off the grid.

8. For those who like to go up, try your hands at outdoor rock climbing. And for those who like to go down, rappelling into a slot canyon might be more your style.

9. Fly through the jungle canopy on a zip line, or work as a team to complete a high ropes course in a redwood forest. As you take in the gorgeous bird’s-eye views, you’ll also build your confidence (and maybe finally overcome your fear of heights!).

10. If you think you’ve tried all the winter activities there are, think again. A dogsled trip is fun for the whole family, and so is hot chocolate in the lodge at the end of the day.
