Parents of little kids can tell you dealing with children's attitudes -- which often range from adorable to "OMG, where the hell did my sweet angel go?!" -- is far from easy. Both your patience and sanity will get tested, and even the best of us feel all sorts of guilty if and when we lose our sh*t. That's why mom Shauna Harvey recently shared a brilliant rubber band hack for parents that's the perfect visual reminder to help moms and dads keep their cool the next time their kids test their limits.

After surviving bout after bout of bad behavior with her 4-year-old daughter, Harvey reveals in her Facebook post that she was "so incredibly stressed out" -- "to the point of crying at least every other day" -- and needed a lifeline in the patience department, as many parents with tots often do.

Equipped with a common beauty item many mothers wear, Shauna decided to give an unconventional parenting hack a try to help her "exercise patience."

"I wore 5 rubber bands on my wrist from the time I got up, to the time I tucked him in just now," the mom writes.

Scratching your head as to how rubber bands can bless parents with more patience? Keep on reading.

"The 5 rubber bands represent every time you lose your cool or say something unkind to your child," Harvey adds. She continues:

"Every time that happens, you move one band to the other wrist. To 'gain the band back,' you must do 5 kind/positive things with your child (dance party, singing a song together, reading together, etc).

I read that science shows for every bad reaction, it takes 5 POSITIVE reactions to regain a positive relationship. I'm going to be using this method until it becomes a habit and basically turns into an auto pilot ritual."

What a powerful visual, right?!

Since she started practicing the patience trick, Shauna says she just recently finished her first day "with all 5 bands on the original wrist," and that's beyond awesome.

Shauna's now-viral Facebook post has been shared over 11,300 times, though she says the trick wasn't her invention. The mom credits Kelly Holmes's The (Reformed) Idealist Mom blog post for the idea (Holmes references the hair tie hack in her book, Happy You, Happy Family). The hack resonates with so many parents in search of ways to help exercise more patience with their kids, and just proves we're all in this together.

Others also thought the hair tie hack might help stressed moms watch the internal words they utter, which is an area so many of us overlook.

No matter how frustrated and angry we get with ourselves whenever we lose patience, it's important to remember we're all trying our best and have the ability to turn the page and start fresh. As Shauna says in her post, "We're all human, we lose our cool, but as parents, it's our job to re-route and be examples to our children!"
