Bringing a new life into the world is an incredibly emotional time for parents, but it's also a pretty intense experience for little ones who are about to become big brothers and sisters for the first (or second, or third) time. For moms, it can be tough to know how to give our older kids the reassurance and love they need during this delicate transition. A recent viral photo of a mother giving her daughter a final hug before delivering her new baby perfectly illustrates this tug-of-war on our heartstrings!

So sweet! Those little arms wrapped around Mommy's neck ... just precious. And such a lovely reminder that the bond we share with each individual child is unique and unbreakable, no matter how many new members we welcome to our families.

Of course, even if we know that, kids aren't always 100 percent sure that a brand-new sibling won't somehow take their place in our hearts. They're not totally convinced that we won't love that new baby just a little bit more -- which is why moments like the one in this photo are so important.

When my second child was born, my daughter (who was 4 years old at the time) was understandably thrown for a loop. While I labored with my son, she spent the day crying and throwing tantrums with her grandmother -- and by the time he was born, she'd worked herself into quite a state. I'll never forget her angry, tear-stained little face when she walked into my hospital room ... and how it completely transformed the second she saw her new baby brother.

"Awww, is that him??" she asked, visibly melting.

It's a memory that still brings tears to my eyes, almost 11 years later (even if she's rarely quite so enamored of her brother these days). The truth is, our kids never stop needing reminders that they're irreplaceable to us in every way. They never stop needing hugs like this one. And neither do we!
