US Olympic Sprinter Allyson Felix Owes Her Fighting Spirit to Her Devoted Mom

allyson felixIf there's one thing nearly all parents want to teach their children, it's to never give up. US Olympic gold medalist sprinter Allyson Felix's mom most certainly succeeded in getting that point across: As Marlean Felix says in a new installment of Procter & Gamble's Raising an Olympian series, her daughter "just doesn't have the 'give up spirit'" -- and anyone who's ever seen Allyson run would have to agree.

That determination comes at a price, Marlean explains: "Allyson is extremely hard on herself," she says. "No one beats her up more than she does." That's why Marlean has made it a priority to help her daughter to find strength in her journey and keep on going no matter what. When Allyson was devastated to receive the silver medal instead of the gold in 2008, for example -- Marlean says her "job as a mom was just to console and comfort her, and help her to recognize her accomplishment even within her defeat."

We can all learn so much from Marlean's approach to guiding her child through life's hurdles. It's absolutely heartbreaking to see our kids feel like they've failed -- especially when they're always winners in our eyes! -- but it's an experience no human can escape, unfortunately. So it's up to us to help them see how disappointment can be transformed into triumph, and that doing your best is truly all that matters.
