Beautiful Images of Mothers Surviving Postpartum Depression Are Everything (PHOTOS)

postpartum depression honest body projectNatalie McCain, the inspiring photographer and creator of The Honest Body Project, shed an important light on moms who have battled postpartum depression. The series "The True Faces of Depression" aims to end the shame many mothers feel when faced with PPD, and it shows the beauty in their triumphs.

The women photographed shared their deepest and darkest thoughts, empowering other women to get help and know they are not alone. When I spoke with Natalie about her photo series on depression many moms face, I further realized how these images can truly help women.

How has this PPD photo series enlightened you?

Each of the women in this series touched me. I found myself relating to each of their stories in different ways. It made me realize that if we were to open up more on these topics, we would all feel so much less alone and relate to each other so much more. It helps to know that you aren't alone in your struggles.

How did the photographs change or inspire the women you photographed?

I hope that the women found more strength through participating in this series. They are all amazing women who were so brave to share their stories. Many women tell me that it helps them to see their beauty in a new way.

What do you think we as a society need to do more of to help moms with PPD?

Mental illness is a topic that most people aren't willing to speak up about because of the stigma that society has placed on it. Most new moms want to put on the facade of being "perfect" because that is what society says we need to be. Postpartum depression is something that so many women suffer from, yet they suffer alone because they are afraid to speak out. I hope that my series will inspire women to speak up and share their struggles with their friends, family, and doctors if need be.

What were some of the surprises that happened when you were photographing this series?

Photographing this series really opened my eyes to the fact that you never know what someone is struggling with. Everyone can put on a smile and pretend to be okay. We need to be more proactive and reach out to our loves ones.
