Here's What a New Mom Really Looks Like (PHOTO)

The photo, posted on Facebook, is of Phoenix-based Danielle Haines, taken three days after she'd given birth to her son Ocean in November 2014. While the photo kind of says it all, her caption explains in more detail just how hellish new motherhood can be.

For instance: She hadn't slept since she'd gone into labor. Her nipples were cracked and bleeding. She was lonely because her husband had just returned to work.

So when her sister came by to offer moral support, she also asked to take a photo, saying Danielle looked "raw and beautiful." And Danielle is glad she did.

This is a picture of me 3 days postpartum. I was so raw and so open, I was a fucking mess. I loved my baby, I missed...

More from The Stir: 6 Photos That Perfectly Capture the Insanity of Parenting

Danielle asked other moms on Facebook to share what their own postpartum experience was like ... and the response was incredible. One mom admitted that new motherhood "kicked my ass both times." Another said, "I didn't understand how hard, how different, how difficult it was actually going to be."

And I'm right there with them! Although new motherhood had its magical moments, the sleep deprivation and loneliness were unbearable. And of course, you think you should be on cloud nine nonstop because of your beautiful baby, but you're not. Then you start wondering what's wrong with you, why aren't you happy, you must be a bad mom ... and on and on.

So it's such a relief to see moms getting honest about their postpartum experiences, since that way we can all know we're not alone, or awful evil people -- just moms getting through this together.
