The Amazing Thing About Motherhood

Kelly Rowland and her son Titan

Perhaps the most amazing thing about motherhood is how indiscriminate it really is. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, big or small, young or old, beautiful or unattractive, wildly talented or plain and simple – once you have a baby, all moms share a common thread. We all fall deeply, irrevocably in love and find ourselves in a constant state of unexpected awe.

Kelly Rowland is one of the best examples of the purity of motherhood. Kelly is a beautiful, driven, hard-working and successful singer, songwriter, actor and television personality. And now, she’s a mom.

Kelly joined us on The Stir to talk about her latest and greatest role and her transition into motherhood. Her son, Titan, was born in November and when asked where his name came from, Kelly laughed, explaining that since she did all the work, it was up to her husband to come up with a name for the baby. They agreed on Titan, rooted in Greek mythology; a strong name for a boy born to two strong parents.

But no matter how strong or well prepared we think we are, when that first baby comes, we’re still surprised by the depths of our emotions and our natural, innate reactions. And often those are the things that make for the best moms.

“Patience!” Kelly laughed. “I was way impatient before he got here. I think what makes me a good mom is my patience. And I actually don’t mind getting up in the middle of the night. I just feel like it’s another opportunity to see him. It’s so cool cause you go in there and he’s really supposed to be sleeping, or sleepy, but he’s up and bright and happy. And I’m like, ‘You’re supposed to be tired!’ All the books [and yes, Kelly reads them just like we do!] say you’re not supposed to look at him cause that will wake him up, but I can’t help it! I just look into his eyes and I’m just so happy we can see another day together!”

Like most working moms, the hardest part for Kelly is spending time away from her baby. She recently returned from Paris for Fashion Week and the closer she got to getting home, the more emotional she became. But, thanks to whiffs of Dreft Baby Detergent, she was able to keep his scent in her senses.

“Those were the longest six days ever. When I saw the baby, I was crying. I just missed him so much! My clothes smelled like him, but it still wasn’t enough! It wasn’t like having him physically in my arms. But it did hold me over!”

It’s amazing how just the smallest of scents can make us moms feel closer to those we love!

Being Kelly’s son, it’s no surprise that Titan’s clothes are a priority.

“The goal every day is to mix a little of his father’s style with a little Kanye West,” Kelly laughed. “I like to try and meet in the middle.”

But, as Titan is beginning to teeth, he’s way more interested in how his clothes feel on his gums than how they look on his body.

Whether you’re a working mom, a stay-at-home mom or a famous working mom, it’s super-important to still make time for you.

“I think you’re so busy pouring out, whether it’s to your husband, or your baby, to the job or to the rest of the world. You have to pour back into yourself.”

Kelly is good about taking her moments, either meditating in the morning or just listening to music and zoning out. She knows that even if her tank is half full, at least there’s something in there for herself.

But at the same time, she knows how important it is to have quality family time.

“We call it a Titan sandwich when just the three of us get together and hang out. That’s the best time. It really fills me up in a way I could never have imagined and it’s the best.”

Speaking of family time, Kelly feels blessed by the strong women in her life. She talks of her three “moms,” her mother, her Mama T and her mother-in-law and how their love and sacrifices have been so inspirational in her own motherhood journey.

Kelly watches her son with the same awe that her “moms” felt as they watched her develop into the beautiful woman she is. But she knows what’s inside is what really matters.

“That’s the most important lesson I want Titan to learn. It’s definitely inner beauty. And the foundation of who he is. His identity needs to come from home, not the rest of the world. It’s important for me to instill in him morals and values and to learn that family is first. He’s a gift. As we all are. A gift.”

As the multi- talented Kelly Rowland juggles amazing moments of motherhood with her successful career, she knows she’s got to keep it real. But, for Kelly, that’s not difficult.

“I keep it real with my fans! I have no choice, of course, but to keep it real with my family. That’s consistent about me. I don’t change for anybody or anything. I’m just me. What you see is what you get.”

And what the world sees is an amazing mom who just happens to be to be an amazing performer as well.
