Love Your Work -- And Your Kids (VIDEO)

Everyone who has children and a job has struggled with the question: "Work or stay home?" The right answer is different for everyone. And, as it turns out, the struggle to figure out what's best for you and for your family isn't limited to the so-called "mommy wars." Dads deal with it too. The answer isn't any easier when both people in the couple are "dad."

For David, one of the stars of Mamma Mia! on Broadway and dad to ridiculously cute toddler Sadie, it's been a debate since he and his partner Russell brought their daughter home. And they've made some sacrifices to figure it out...sacrifices that might sound familiar to, oh, any of us.

David's mostly stayed home but went back to Mamma Mia! when he got the chance; Russell has provided most of the income. Both he and Russell say part of what they want to model for their daughter is doing work they love, even if it means they aren't always there with her.

This rang so true with me. If you are lucky enough to have a job you really, truly love, a job that is a huge part of who you are, then turning your back on it for years is a scary thought. Like David, I am lucky enough to be able to work in large part when my husband is home or the kids are sleeping, but it still involves juggling and scheduling and meetings and far more "I have a deadline, here, watch some PBS Kids" than I feel good about. But I'm modeling a passion for work to my kids, and (I hope) how to integrate raising children with my work life, much like David -- and like most parents.

How did you work out the work-life balance for your family?
