10 Things Teens Should Be Thanking Their Lucky Stars for This Week

pay phoneAt the risk of sounding like one of those crotchety old grumps who starts every sentence with "Back in my day," being a teenager now has got to be so much better than it was, well, back in my day. Of course I get that things are more complicated for the current crop of teens, what with the bullying epidemic and social networking adding yet another potential avenue for public humiliation, but I still stand by my theory: Teens today have a lot more to be thankful for than we did.

And if you don't agree with me, I can only assume that you were spared the experience of being a teenager when jeans had ankle zippers, Color Me Badd and Vanilla Ice polluted the airwaves, every girl's bangs were crunchy with hairspray, and Julia Roberts was that hot new actress getting all the buzz for playing a hooker in some Richard Gere movie.

Here are, in my opinion, 10 Things Teens Should Be Very Thankful for This Year ...

  1. iPods. We had cassette tapes. Okay? We may as well have been wearing animal skins and living in caves.
  2. Cellphones/smartphones. No texting for us. Nope, we had pay phones and phones with cords attached. (Oh lord, and beepers. How could I forget?)
  3. The Internet. Do they even make encyclopedias anymore?
  4. Sephora.
  5. Robert Pattinson.
  6. Pandora. Dang, the radio was a crapshoot! (Hence the above reference to Color Me Badd.)
  7. Diverse standards of beauty. Of course we still have a long way to go in this area, but at least we've learned to consider physical attributes besides blonde/tan/busty attractive.
  8. Tolerance. Again, I know it ain't perfect out there, but it's better than it used to be. Glee never would have made it to prime time when I was a teen.
  9. Reality TV. Hear me out on this one: Before reality TV, we really had no idea how stupid we looked getting wasted and making bad decisions. Thanks, Snooki!
  10. Starbucks. There was a time before Starbucks?! Oh yes, and a bleak time it was. In my town, one of the most popular teen hangouts was a parking lot. The second most popular teen hangout? Also a parking lot.

What would you be thankful for if you were a teen now?
