You Can Dress Just Like Your Favorite Emmy Stars in Red

Posted by Emily Abbate
on Sep 19, 2011 at 2:30 PM

lea micheleThe 63rd Annual Emmy Awards have come and gone, and the only thing more abundant than laughs during Sunday night's show was the color red. From Lea Michele in Marchesa and Kate Winslet in Elie Saab to Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan, I wasn't just seeing a whole lot of red, I was LOVING IT. Did you get a glimpse of Sofia Vergara's curvalicious Vera Wang dress?! I die! If only I had some fancy-schmancy gala dinner to go to.

What I really love about all these ladies in red is that they have different skin tones, body shapes, and hairstyles, but the color looked fab on 'em all. Could red be the new black?! Seems to me like after last night, it's at least going to be the "it" color this season, which means it's time to stock up! Check out these 8 great red dresses for fall:

Missoni for Target: Is This the Best Designer Collaboration Yet?

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Aug 13, 2011 at 1:00 PM

Missoni for TargetThe lookbook for Missoni for Target is out and I have to say I'm impressed by the 400-piece collection, which includes women's, men's and girls' clothing, accessories, shoes and housewares.

Check out this fabulous sweater set and accordion pleat skirt, for example.

WANT.

I'm very concerned about the quality of the knit -- somehow it's hard to believe that it'll be anything but scratchy.

But from lookbook photos alone, anyway, I definitely want to check this collection out in person.

So yes, I'll be at my local Target on September 13th, the day the collection debuts.

Want to see lots more looks from the collection?

Click through!

And then tell me what you think of this collaboration in the comments.

Michelle Obama's Gap Dress Is More Than a Fashion Statement

Posted by Maressa Brown
on Jun 13, 2011 at 11:35 AM

michelle obama gapThe First Lady became a style icon by looking sharp, bringing retro styles back in a modern way, rocking bright, bold colors and patterns, and mixing and matching little-known designers with big name ones. But Michelle Obama also deserves two thumbs-up for wearing a $30 Gap dress. It's budget-friendly but, at the same time, reflective of a bigger fashion trend that we may only be aware of subconsciously.

It's not just that most of us are constantly striving to be more economic with our fashion choices. It's that going to the other extreme and wearing super-pricey, in-your-face expensive designer styles looks more gauche than ever right now.

Remember back about 10 years ago during the Sex & the City heyday, the Clinton era, dot-com bubble of extravagant spending?

DIY Louboutins Are Still Ugly

Posted by April Peveteaux

diy louboutinsHow many of you own a pair of Louboutins? I can't see you, raise your hands higher. Oh, one of you? Well that's great because I'm about to bash the "it" shoe of the decade, and I'd like to get you all on my team. Can we all say it together: What's so special about a red sole on your shoe?

A pump is a pump is a boring-ass pump. Throw a higher heel on it, and it's still just a platform. Why should I pay $900 for a pair of shoes because someone painted the bottom red?

Obviously, this gal thought the same thing because she's DIY'ing some soles and turning them into shoes that are exactly as attractive as the super-fancy Louboutins. Which is to say, not at all attractive. But I do think 16-year-old Tara Haughton is on to something. Now if Haughton could start knocking off some truly original -- and expensive -- shoes, that would be a feet feat.

Whaddya say, Tara? Take a stab at these.

The Stir's Jill Smokler in New Target Campaign: Curvy Girls Rejoice!

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Apr 30, 2011 at 10:37 AM

TargetTarget sent me an e-mail yesterday about its new style campaign for Merona, featuring The Stir's very own Jill Smokler!

Way to go, Jill!

Not only was I excited (and maybe a little bit... envious) to see Jill being styled and made up in her very own photo shoot, I was also pleased to see that Target NAILED IT with this campagain.

She's Still Got It readers have long lamented the attention given to Target's junior-sized clothing lines, and the lack of clothing for curvier women.

Well check it out, ladies. Jill's going to spend the entire month of May letting you style her for various events!

Click through to see how it's all going to work.

Are Thrift Stores Getting Too Snobby?

Posted by Amy Kuras
on Nov 23, 2010 at 7:50 PM

Even though the economy is supposed to be improving, here's one economic stat that says it isn't: High-end resale boutiques are popping up all over the place.

Here's how they work: People bring in their shoes, purses, and clothes and can either sell them outright to the store, or put them on consignment, where they get about 40 percent of the purchase price when their items sell.

Yes, that's right: rich people are selling their Versace and Jimmy Choos. And buying different ones ... used. Who would have thought? I mean, God forbid they stalk Target and H&M the day their designer collections come out like the rest of us, and yet, they still need to look fancy. Can you imagine the humiliation if someone showed up to, say, a Junior League gala in something another member had consigned the week before? Quelle horreur!

There's an upside to this for us mere mortals:

Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen's JC Penney Line Has Great Shoes!

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Nov 22, 2010 at 6:50 PM

OlsenboyeBack when Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen launched Olsenboye for JC Penney, I looked at the line, but decided not to write about it, since it looked suitable only for 12- to 14-year-old girls.

But when I saw a pair of Olsenboye shoes in a magazine recently, I decided to take another look -- and am I glad I did!

While the Olsenboye clothing pickings are still slim, there are several cute, affordable pairs of shoes in the line that look far more expensive than they are.

Check out this Ivy Platform Bootie (JC Penney, $39.99 on sale) for example. This neutral shoe is a totally hot look that would work with lots of outfits.

Plus Size Cold Weather Essentials -- For a Steal!

Posted by Sarah Conley
on Nov 4, 2010 at 1:05 PM

As temperatures slowly begin to dip, we reach into the back of the closet or underneath the bed to retrieve the snuggly scarves, sweaters, and coats we'd hidden away. Inevitably, there's always a piece (or three) that needs to be updated for the season and some that have been far too well-loved to make it through the next few months.

Finding the perfect figure-flattering pieces to add to your wardrobe can be tough on a budget, but fortunately, Lane Bryant is having a 40 percent off pre-Thanksgiving sale that just so happens to have all the essentials you need, at a price your wallet will like.

Moderation is still important -- to avoid going credit card crazy, I've done all the shopping for you!

Twenty-five seems to be the magic number for Just My Size, the plus-size apparel site. In addition to celebrating over 25 years in business, JMS recently showcased new styles for holiday, spring, and summer, with no single piece retailing for more than $25.

Fun fact about JMS -- their commitment to value and fit has helped them to become the United States' number one plus-size apparel brand. While the styles aren't cutting edge, you can find colorful basics to mix and match, most of which are under $15.

Want to know what $7 item you need in your wardrobe, plus JMS' spring plans? Keep reading ...
