Alexander McQeen, 40-year old British fashion designer, is dead in an apparent suicide, according to the Daily Mail.

Woe be to the fashion industry and to all of his loved ones.

Keep reading for statements and a look at some of Alexander McQueen's recent designs...

Alexander McQueen (given name Lee) was named "British Designer of the Year" four times, and his designs and runway shows were works of elaborate art. Most recently, he worked closely with the always avant garde Lady Gaga.

This is horribly sad news to precede the start of New York's Fashion Week. McQueen was set to launch a new collection in Paris in less than a month.

In his personal life, McQueen lost his mother just a few days ago and lost a close friend Isabella Blow, who helped set off the designer's stardom, to suicide three years go.

In a statement, the designer's company headquarters said: 'On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage, it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family. Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this."

Close friend and fashion model, Kate Moss, also released a statement that said: "Kate is shocked and devastated at the tragic loss of her dear friend Lee McQueen. Her thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

Alexandra Shulman, editor of Vogue, said: "Lee McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs. At one level, he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn't."

Awful news. We send our deepest condolences to Lee McQueen's family and friends.
