Shopping for trends can perk up your wardrobe, but I think it's best to be frugal when buying these items because the trend passes and I don't want to waste a lot of money on something that I'll be over next year.

Stylist to the stars, Michael O'Connor breaks down what the staple wardrobe items everyone should invest in. He says, "If you're going to splurge, make sure it's on a classic item that you'll have for years."

I found some items to go with his suggestions....

Splurge on....

  • Black pencil skirt -- It goes with just about everything, even a basic tank. Wear it with a jacket or cardigan and some pretty shoes and you're ready for an interview or important meeting with the school board. Check out Ann Taylor Loft's City Synthetic Pencil Skirt ($59.50).
  • White button down shirt -- Wear it on the beach as a cover-up or with a pair of jeans. Or dress it up with black pants or a pencil skirt! Check out Ralph Lauren's Classic Fit Oxford ($89.50).
  • Cocktail ring -- A bold accessory like this one can add a burst of color or sparkle to any outfit. Rings like this make me smile. Check out Banana Republic's Bright Party Ring ($49).
  • Knee high boots -- You'll want a pair that can go with almost everything -- over your jeans, under your jeans, with a dress...so think about your wardrobe before investing. Check out Zappos' Type Z Knee-High Boots ($100 on sale).
  • Little black dress -- O'Connor says, "you can't go wrong if you buy a simple black dress. There are so many ways to dress this up or down using the right accessories." Check out Express' Drop Waist Cowl Dress ($49.50).

How many of these items do you have in your closet?
