Using Monistat...On Your Face

Monistat makeup primer

We all know what Monistat is for but did you know some women use it as a makeup primer? CafeMom RaiderRylee wanted to know about how Monistat works into a makeup routine in the All About Hair And Makeup Group.

Here's what some ladies had to say....

It's not the Monistat that we think of first, it's the Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel, traditionally used for chafing and irritation in intimate areas -- bikini area, underarm, inner thigh. This is the one that is said to be an excellent makeup primer.

Faith123 directed to a link that said when applied to face, Monistat Soothing Care dries to a powdery finish, smooths out skin, reduces the appearance of pores, and helps makeup stay on.

dylsmom said she has tried it but it made her skin break out.

IsoAnAtisMommy didn't get good results either. She said it made her makeup cakey, but her best friend uses it and really likes it.

texasgypsy tried it, but prefers using Milk of Magnesia as a good primer. She reminds us that people's skin need different things, so what works for one, might not work for another. I know that MOM helps make eyeshadow stay put -- even Tyra Banks recommends it.

Update: I just learned a bit from KnoxvilleDoula, who shared that women who are pregnant or nursing should not use Monistat or Milk of Magnesia. And she notes that any potential users of these products should consult a doctor before using on areas for which it was not originally intended. Plus, never use Monistat near your eyes.

There is a lot to consider before using.

Do you think it's safe? Have you ever tried Monistat Soothing Care as a makeup primer?

NO way! Great tip. I am new to the world of "primer" for make-up but after using primer, it makes a big difference. Thanks for the idea.

There's a big post in the All about Hair and Makeup group, that's why I tried it.  I have been using it for about 3wks now and it works great!  It makes my makeup stay on all day and makes my skin feel very soft.  It also absorbs oil.  There was one mom who made a post about how it made her face break out though.  I have sensitive skin and it works for me :)

OK ya got me..I want to try it, PLEASE tell me HOW do I use Monistat and Milk of Mag?  I really need it. Thanks

Oh dear! First of all, Monistat should NEVER be used anywhere but vaginally! It's on their website. Also, even tho it is available OTC -- if you've never used it before, you should see a DR FIRST to make sure you aren't allergic to the ingredients. Thirdly, it is DANGEROUS to get it anywhere NEAR the eyes!! PLEASE do not use this as a makeup primer!

It CANNOT be used in the first trimester of pregnancy, and may cross into breastmilk! The base is MINERAL OIL (yuck) so no wonder it's causing breakouts. It can't be cheap, either, so do yourself a favor and go buy a REAL makeup primer.

Milk of Magnesia is a laxative, pulls water from your body, and has many, many drug interactions, such as if you are on tetracylcline, Cipro, just to mention, too. It is NOT to be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding Go to for more info!

One of the BEST, NATURAL, INEXPENSIVE primers is to peel an orange and use the inner layer directly on your face. You can also use good old Witch Hazel, which is what makeup artists won't leave home without.

I think I will stick to my real make up primer.  Vag cream does not go on the face.  That's just nasty.

Thanks for the insight KnoxvilleDoula! I added it to the piece.

I've tried it and it works ok for me.  I've got really oily skin, and it doesn't control that for me.  It's made with dimethicone, which is what the usual MAKEUP PRIMERS are made of, so if those are safe for your skin, then so is this.  The monistat chafing gel is NOT one of the Monistat line that treats a yeast infection.  It's merely an irritation reliever.  It's not as gross as one thinks it is, just because it's made by Monistat.

This is why I would NEVER use the Monistat 7. I am HORRIBLY allergic to something in it. I can't even use it vaginally! The one time I did, I wanted to shove a hair brush up there or something! You think the itch from a yeast infection was bad, take that and multiply it by 100! That was how bad it was for me! Though now, even the generic stuff irritates me so I'm stuck using other stuff for yeast infection medication which sucks because most of what is sold is either Monistat or the generic forms of Monistat. Bleh.
