This 'Sexy Handmaid' Costume Is Exactly What's Wrong With Halloween

Lingerie retailer Yandy successfully angered most of the Internet recently when it posted a Halloween costume for a sexy handmaid. The problematic costume is clearly inspired by the popular book and show, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. For those who are unfamiliar with the series, it is based on a totalitarian society that treats women as property of the state. In an attempt to repopulate the world, the remaining fertile women are forced to be sex slaves and are consistently raped by men who are trying to get them pregnant. So yeah, you can probably see why this costume was not the brightest idea.

  • The “Brave Red Maiden” costume featured a red minidress, cape, and a white bonnet for $65.

And to make things even more cringeworthy, the site's costume description made light of the futuristic society.

“An upsetting dystopian future has emerged where women no longer have a say. However, we say be bold and speak your mind in this exclusive Brave Red Maiden costume featuring a red mini dress, a matching cloak with an attached hood, and a white bonnet headpiece.”

  • Understandably, people across social media were NOT OK with this.

  • Someone questioned if whoever made this costume understood the premise of the show.

  • And someone else compared the failed look to global warming.

  • Others were just downright confused and pointed out the irony of the whole thing.

  • However, not everyone had an issue with the costume.

  • Yandy has since removed it from the site and issued a statement.

    The full statement reads:

"Yandy always has stood, and will continue to stand, at the forefront of encouraging our customers to 'Own Your Sexy'. We support our customers being comfortable in their skin, regardless of who they are or what they choose to wear. Our corporate ideology is rooted in female empowerment, and gender empowerment overall.

Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that our 'Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume' is being seen as a symbol of women's oppression, rather than an expression of women's empowerment. This is unfortunate, as it was not our intention on any level. Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image.

Given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories we've received, we are removing the costume from our site."

  • BUT, the controversy doesn't end there. People have now taken notice to the multiple "sexy native" costumes on the site.

  • Yeah, this isn't good...

  • Native American costumes have unfortunately been commonly seen for years, and many people still don't understand how insulting they are.

We all need to be much more aware of what we are dressing up as for Halloween. Avoid cultural appropriation, hyper sexualization of serious issues, and anything that you may be second-guessing as cringeworthy. Just don't do it!

Halloween should be fun, not offensive, hurtful, and straight-up disrespectful.
