Tattoo artist Myra Brodsky is drawn to images of the past, especially ones from the Victorian era. Currently tattooing at Black Mirror Parlour in Berlin, Myra has a stunning style; she perfectly depicts shadow and light in her incredible designs, which can be seen in her book, Myra Brodsky: Tattoos & Illustrations. Myra shares with us some of her beautiful work along with how she got her start tattooing and how meaningful her art is to her and those she tattoos.

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that her mother owns a casino and her father was a pinball machine tycoon -- and the imagery wasn't lost on her. Those colors, along with a dark undertone, can be seen in her art, which is a mix of art nouveau and art deco along with a style that is totally signature.

How did you get into tattooing?
I got into tattooing by accident. In 2008, I got to know my best friend Sonja, who liked my drawing skills and decided to teach me tattooing. After that, I started working at several smaller tattoo shops in Berlin.

What was the first tattoo that you got?
It's a broken mirror on my upper arm. It's very old now, and compared to all other tattoos I have, it looks very pale.

Share a good story about a tattoo that you have done.
One of my steady clients works as a anesthesiologist here in Berlin. Her name is Sina. I like her because we share the same interest for classic art. Whenever she's having an appointment with me, you can be sure she's going to stay until late at night. I already gave her two sleeves that show great stories from human history. My favorite (and I'm sure it's her favourite as well) is the story of how Oscar Wilde met Lord Alfred Douglas. Sina is wearing a very accurate and dashing portrait of Douglas on her upper arm now. She is a wonderful and kind human being who I always appreciate being around. Also, she is very rational ... I love listening to her stories. And maybe this is why we picked one of the most beautiful and unconditional love affairs as a motif for her skin. To just remind her that things like this really existed. To widen our horizons as the dreamer and the realist -- because that is what we are.

Have you ever tattooed yourself?
I actually tattooed myself when I was 21. I made a big glass of wine that's pouring out on my right thigh. I kind of liked the experience of tattooing myself. It's great for apprentices. You think you're in less pain because you're so concentrated on what you're doing.

Who and what influences you in work and life?
There's just so many things I pick up from all my travels. Anytime I have to go to a convention or a guest spot, I take a walk through the historic center of each town. It's always great to take a look at the faces of old buildings. Being mostly inspired by the turn of the century, I just love taking pictures of Victorian age art, Belle Époque, or art nouveau elements on houses, and to use them as decorative elements in my tattoo designs.
