How did you get into tattooing?
I've always enjoyed drawing and painting, but I really got interested in tattooing because of my parents. My dad has been getting tattooed since he was young, and he and my mom got tattooed at a shop in Chicago when I was in high school. They took me to get my first one at the same shop when I was 16. I have been in love ever since!

What was your first tattoo?
My first tattoo was an ankh -- same as my dad's first one.

Share a good story about a tattoo.
Just last week I tattooed a vintage-inspired hot air balloon on a client who works in education. Her inspiration for the tattoo was her work, and she wanted something that represented strength and rising up against adversity. It seems as though people often want to get tattooed during difficult or transitory times in their lives. I feel so fortunate to hear people's stories while putting fun artwork on them.

Have you ever tattooed yourself?
I did a proper apprenticeship, so the first tattoo I ever did was on myself with my mentor watching. It was scary but really fun! It's a heart with a friend's initials who passed away just prior to that.

The experience made me very excited to start tattooing other people.

Who and what influences you?
I am constantly influenced by my amazing friends and coworkers and my super talented husband. I also find inspiration from postmodern art, traveling, punk shows, horror movies, vintage photos, and folk art.
