Amy has been tattooing in NYC since 2011, beginning at East Side Ink and Graceland Brooklyn before landing at Brooklyn's Three Kings Tattoo. But Colorado is about to get a new resident -- Amy is moving and will start tattooing at Lifetime Tattoo in Denver. She also tattoos at conventions worldwide.

The Stir: How did you get into tattooing?

Amy: I really got into it from getting tattooed. I was living in Tucson, Arizona, studying painting, and just through years of showing up at the shop, I started talking to the owner about apprenticing.

The Stir: What was the first tattoo that you got?

Amy: A kanji symbol. My friends and I had to go to someone's house to get them because we were underage and I almost passed out. It was really exciting and a great memory!

The Stir: Share a good story about a tattoo that you have done and what it meant to a client.

Amy: I've been tattooing a lot of people for years and we've seen each other go through all kinds of life experiences. For example, one of the first tattoos I did on my sister was a tiny sailboat, and she got it at a time when she was feeling really lost and vulnerable. Years later she wanted to get another boat, this time a giant pirate ship on her side. Not only is it a tough area to sit for, but it represented a feeling of strength and confidence she had gained.

I get a lot of referrals and have worked on people's parents, partners, best friends -- it's just so cool that my world is constantly expanding because of this craft. I'm incredibly lucky.

The Stir: Have you ever tattooed yourself?

Amy: I did a little chess piece, a rook, on my right leg.

The Stir: Who and what influences you?

Amy: Traveling, being lost, art, movies, literature, animals, playing the drums. The city, the desert. People who live fearlessly and make things -- drag queens, riot grrrls, punks, weirdos, nerds, and outsiders inspire me every day.
