She can do any style, and yet once you become familiar with her work, there is a definite style that stands out. I spoke to Lara about her work and also sharing just a few of her gorgeous tattoos.

The Stir: How did you get into tattooing?

Lara: I was in the tattoo environment since I was 16 years old. Piercing came first; I start working as a piercer and then opened a shop with my friends. I spent a year managing the shop, doing piercing and eventually I started tattooing. That happened right after some friends asked me, "Why don’t you start tattooing? Aren’t you curious to try out, at least?" And so I did. Since that moment, I never stopped. Spending lot of years watching people working and being surrounded by tattooers, it definitely made it easier.

The Stir: What was the first tattoo you got?

Lara: The idea of my first tattoo was never completed (luckily!). I had this crazy idea to get snowflakes all over my body, and I started with just one on my arm. It was very pretty, with light blue shading. I ended up hating it though, and after a month, I covered it with black bands.

The Stir: Share a good story about a tattoo you have done.

Lara: Every story is unique. Sometimes it's just about the bond that tattoo creates between me and my client. Honestly, I can’t really pick one.

The Stir: Have you ever tattooed yourself?

Lara: Years ago, me and my best friend got little hearts on our fingers. It is a super light color -- she couldn’t show it because of her job. I let her try on me first and she was so excited that she [could] barely hold the machine. I eventually finished by myself. I was enough lucky to start tattooing on friends; I’ve never had the necessity to tattoo myself. It is pretty uncomfortable.

The Stir: Who and what influences you?

Everything that can inspire me does have an impact on work. I am inspired by art, traveling, photography, architecture, and people. My biggest influence of style definitely comes from my teachers, the people that actually introduced me into tattooing.

Lara Scotton currently works at Daredevil Tattoo in NYC and also travels all over the world doing guest spots at various shops and tattoo conventions.
