What to Wear on an Airplane While Traveling With Kids (PHOTOS)

what to wear airplane travel kidsAirplane travel with kids during the busiest season of the year comes with lots of stresses: getting through airport security, long lines at check-in, packing enough diapers, feeding the kids before a long flight. Figuring out what to wear shouldn’t be one of those stresses. Have you heard of the recent “athleisure” trend? Well, this is the perfect time to jump on board. Continue reading for this week’s style cheat sheet -- what to wear on an airplane while traveling with kids.

Let’s face it -- with airport delays, you could be in for a very long day at the airport with the cranky children! So if you’re traveling with your family this holiday seasons, go ahead and embrace the athleisure trend. Then if you need to do a light jog around the terminal to tire the kids out before boarding, you’ll be ready.

Since you'll want to dress for comfort, let’s build our outfit with a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Luckily, the ill-fitting, gray, Rocky Balboa style of sweatsuit is a thing of the past. Sweats have come a long way, thank goodness! Add a pair of stylish sneakers -- a wardrobe staple that every woman should have in her closet -- and an easy-to-clean tote bag fully stocked with snacks and wipes. To finish things off, throw in a portable travel game perfect for keeping your kids entertained when it comes time to take a break from electronic devices.

I've created two similar outfits -- one that's more budget friendly and one that's splurgier.

Safe travels, be stylish, and Happy Holidays!

Airplane Travel with Kids, Budget Friendly:

Our budget-friendly outfit starts with a geometric color-blocked sweatshirt in burgundy cream from Forever 21. My favorite pattern is a geometric print, so I love this top. To stay comfortable at the airport and during the trip, wear a simple yet stylish pair of black sweatpants from H&M. Joe Fresh is a great retailer for basics at affordable prices, and these black sneakers are a steal at $39. And what could be better than a LeSportSac tote with Snoopy on the front? The nylon fabric is perfect for our travels because spills and crumbs can easily be wiped away. Finally, my youngest son and I love to play Connect 4 together, so I’m adding this portable version for you to enjoy with your kids during the flight.

Airplane Travel with Kids, Splurge Worthy:

While this gray sweatshirt from Zara isn’t too pricey for our splurge-worthy outfit, it definitely looks much more expensive! And when you pair it with the &go City Trek Trouser by lululemon, the outfit is perfectly complete. Add a pair of colorful New Balance Classics, and you’ll be ready for the airport in style. Did you know that Stella McCartney designs a line of athletic wear for Adidas? Here, I’ve picked her Big Sports Bag to take you from airport travel to everyday. Last, one of my son’s favorite travel games -- the Flip-to-Win Hangman Travel Game by Melissa & Doug. No loose pieces, which means it’s stress free.
