How Often Should I Clean My Makeup Brushes?

Those makeup brushes you swipe over your face daily -- ever wonder what else besides pigment is hanging on in the bristles? How often should you clean those things, anyway? We asked board-certified Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York dermatologist and physician and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center Jessica J. Krant MD, MPH, for her advice on cleaning our makeup brushes.

How often you should clean

The short answer? It depends. "Makeup brush cleaning schedules can vary depending on how much, how often, and what type of makeup is being used," Dr. Krant says.

She says if you're using a brush only for dry powders it will need less frequent cleaning, maybe once a month or so. If you're using the brush for cream powders, creams, or liquids, you'll need to clean it once every week or two.

How to clean your makeup brushes

You can use a special makeup brush cleaner, but you don't have to. Instead, put a little baby shampoo in a bowl of lukewarm water. Rinse your brush out under running water, then gently swirl around in soapy water, then rinse, swirl, and repeat until the water runs clear from your brush.

Carefully blot dry with a towel (keeping the bristles in shape) and then let dry on a towel until completely dry.
