Jane Birkin Wants Celeb-Loved Handbag Renamed Until Hermés Cleans Up Its Act

Jane Birkin Though the Hermès Birkin bag has long been one of the world's most coveted accessories, carried by the likes of Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian, there's one woman who doesn't want anything to do with it. The model and muse behind the uber-expensive tote, Jane Birkin, wants Hermès to rename the Birkin Croco bag in light of learning what cruel practices may be going on behind the scenes of its production.

In a statement released by PETA, who conducted an investigation into the bag's production, Birkin explained her stance:

Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name. ... I have asked Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag.

Animal activists have to be rejoicing that Birkin has taken this stand and is shedding light on this troubling issue. As stunning as the bag might be, how can anyone feel good carrying it knowing how it was made?

It'll be interesting to see if this news impacts the handbag's popularity. (A fuschia version was once auctioned for over $200,000 at Christie's!!) Will stars like Kris Jenner, pictured below, stick the status symbol in the far recesses of their closets rather than be seen clutching one (which requires the belly skins of three crocs to make, we might add)?

Time will tell, but you have to admire Birkin for speaking out and standing up for the crocodiles. Hopefully, bringing this situation to light will force the fashion house to make some serious changes.
