My Harmless Addiction

I truly believe that everyone has some sort of addiction. Take my Uncle Tony for instance. At every family gathering, he sneaks outside, every hour on the hour, and comes back in stinking like a chimney. My sister Emily keeps a bag of chocolate in her purse and pops candy like pills. My addiction, while quite harmless, is perhaps a bit odd.

I am addicted to hand cream.

Now, I don’t know about you, but by the end of the day, I’m beat. The last thing I want to do is make another trek downstairs. Had my sweet husband not been snoring away, I would have batted my eyelashes and begged him to fuel my addiction. Instead, I had to take matters into my own hands.

I stole from my daughter.

I literally get the heebie-jeebies if I have a sudden urge to apply and can’t find my hand cream. Which is precisely why I keep a tube by my bed, another at my desk, one by the kitchen sink, one in my purse, and one in my car.

One day, the inevitable happened. I ran out. Of course, I didn’t completely run out; I’d never let that happen. But I was all ready for bed, had just put my book down, and reached over for my hand cream for the final application of the day. It was empty. I couldn’t squeeze another drop out of it.

I tiptoed into my baby's room and grabbed the jar of Aquaphor that was sitting on the changing table and brought it back into my room. And as soon as I rubbed it into my winter-weathered hands, I knew Aquaphor was going to be my new best friend.

It may sound silly being so obsessed over hand cream. But I have hands that crack and peel and feel like sandpaper. Aquaphor is simply amazing. There’s something about the combination of ingredients that protect and penetrate the skin like no product I’ve ever used before. Since I started using it, my hands feel silky and smooth and I haven’t gotten half as many of those painful little cracks that I used to suffer with all winter long.

My baby girl never knew about the late-night heist. The next day I went out to the store and purchased plenty more Aquaphor just to make sure we keep her diaper rash away and my diaper-changing hands healthy and happy.

How do you protect your hands in the wintertime?
