10 Lies Moms Tell Themselves in the Fitting Room (PHOTOS)

Liz Alterman | Nov 11, 2014 Beauty & Style

fitting roomFor some moms, there's no place more humbling than the fitting room. You know what I'm talking about -- the mirrors either make you look short and stubby or like a pasty giraffe, and the glaring lights akin to those used in police interrogations wash you out while spotlighting every flaw. Don't get me started!

But still, a mom's got to shop every once in a while, right? Sometimes to get through the whole experience, I tell myself a few white lies. What's the harm? A gal's got to do what a gal's got to do!

Most often I'm guilty of #7. Check out our slideshow and then tell us: Which one of these "fibs" have you ever told yourself?

  • Help! Something's Wrong With This Mirror!

I've often joked that I'd rather find a rattlesnake in a fitting room than catch a glimpse of my own thighs in a three-way mirror while I'm in there. What is it about seeing your reflection in triplicate that makes you want to avert your eyes and scream, "Things don't look this bad at home!"

  • No One Could Look Good in This Lighting!

Whether it's a dim bulb or a big ugly fluorescent rectangle, many moms will agree that the unflattering light in a fitting room can be even more jarring than finding your toddler standing beside your bed in the middle of the night staring at you.

What is it about a fitting room that makes you feel like you're suddenly sporting a jiggly Santa belly? While you might not rock six-pack abs at home, doesn't it seem like things get a little extra droopy when you're surrounded by an army of slim mannequins?

  • I'm Not Buying This Out of Desperation ... I Really Like It!

Have you ever found yourself roaming your nearest shopping mall the day (or night!) before a wedding or special event desperately searching for something to wear?

Your overwhelming need to find the perfect ensemble before stores close can often cloud your judgment, and you'll convince yourself you really LOVE that dress just to avoid wearing the same old thing. Been there many times!

  • I'm Going to Start Exercising As Soon As I Get Home!

Maybe it's the combination of the lights and mirrors, but I almost always promise myself I'm going to start a new fitness regime the minute I leave the mall. How about you?

  • I Will Totally Dry Clean This!

When I see that dreaded "dry clean only" label, I should just immediately put the item back. Why? Because despite telling myself I'll take it to the dry cleaners, I will be lazy and cheap and attempt to launder it myself and it will end up small enough to fit on only your slimmest American Girl Doll. Sigh.

  • If I Eat Salads & Berries for the Next 2 Weeks, This Dress Will Look Amazing!

If I fall in love with an item and it's on sale, I will vow to do almost anything to make it fit. Until I get home, that is, and I'm surrounded by Halloween candy again and that plan goes out the window -- and my new piece goes to the back of the closet.

  • The Salesgirl Would Never Lie to Me!

Ever wander out of the fitting room thinking the dress you're trying on is too tight in the hips and too big in the bust, only to have the salesgirl tell you, "That's how it's supposed to look!" Huh. Really?

You may have come out from behind the curtain looking for guidance, but what you got instead was your own personal cheerleader. While it's tempting to tell yourself, "She's right! This looks great!" go with your gut so you can avoid an unnecessary return later!

  • These Pants Are Definitely Mislabled

Ever tell yourself, "These jeans are completely mismarked. Or maybe I need glasses. Either way, that must be a 0 and not an 8 after all. Yes, that's it."

  • If I Buy This, I Won't Buy Another Thing This Year!

Have you ever found that one item that will take you from "boring" to "alluring" but will definitely blow your budget in the process? When that happens, do you bargain with yourself and swear that this piece of clothing will be last you purchase for the rest of the year -- possibly even the decade? Good luck with that!
