6 Prettiest Dresses From the 68th Annual Tony Awards (PHOTOS)

Consider it the most serious of all entertainment awards shows: the annual Tony Awards, which celebrates the brightest talent on stage. It also gives celebs a chance to prove they aren't just pretty faces, but can hack it in front of a live audience, as well. And when it comes to dress code, stars tend to choose gowns that are especially elegant and uber-dramatic.

Last night's 68th Annual Tony Awards didn't disappoint. A handful of famous beauties, known both for their stage and screen presence, showed up wearing some of the prettiest dresses we've seen in a long time. Here are 6 of the best looks from the ceremony.

What's your favorite gown from the Tony Awards?

  • Emmy Rossum

    1

The Phantom of the Opera star Emmy Rossum glowed in a silvery-metallic floor-length Ralph Lauren creation. The star was so smitten with her look that she took to Instagram to post: "So in ♡ with this #ralphlauren gown at the #tonys#100happydays#4happychicks." Can you blame her?

  • Kate Mara

    2

Kate Mara took a chance that really worked for her when she opted for an embellished black and silver mini dress by Dolce & Gabbana instead of a traditional floor-length gown. The House of Cards actress managed to avoid looking cutesy by choosing a dress with super-dramatic puffy sleeves.

  • Leighton Meester

    3

There's always room for minimalist glamour. Leighton Meester, pictured here with new husband Adam Brody, lets her natural beauty shine through by choosing a simple, white Antonio Berrardi gown. The sweet sleeves and clean cut are flawless, and the hue works on her peaches and cream complexion.

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal

    4

Not everyone fell hard for Maggie Gyllenhaal's strapless Dolce & Gabbana gown, which is adorned with feathers and beads, but I can't help feeling like I'm looking at a beautiful work of art. Maggie's hair and makeup are so minimal that she can totally pull off this over-the-top dress.

  • Anna Gunn

    5

Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn wore a gold beaded gown by Jenny Packham that absolutely blew us away. The actress is as poised as a statue in this unique gown, which isn't just age-appropriate, but also contemporary and fresh.

  • Idina Menzel

    6

I saved the best for last. Idina Menzel may be known as the actress whose name John Travolta fudged at this year's Oscars, but the Broadway pro gets nothing but respect at the Tony Awards. Her stunning burgundy Zac Posen gown accentuated her great curves and the color looked simply amazing on her.
